Louisville, Ky., June 9 U.R) Hoop Jr., bred to the racing purple of a Florida millionaire, splattered over the muddy track of Churchill Downis today to win the 71st annual running of the Kentucky Derby before a rain- soaked throng of 65,000. The fleet three-year-old of Fred W, Hooper, who moved his breeding farms to Alabama after making his fortune as a contrac tor around Jacksonville, Fla., went to the post the favorite and ran up to that rating, leading from the start and winning Go ing Away by six lenRths. Pot O' Luck, the second choice in the betting, ran second and to keep the odds running true to form, Darby. Dieppe, the third ranking favorite, was third in this richest derby of all time. The Margin between the sec ond and third horses was a half a length, with Air Sailor number foiir in the field of 16. That large entry gave Hoop Jr., not only the blanket of roses and glory that go with America's primier horse race, but also $64, 860 $115 more than Pensive won in the 1944 classic. Ridden superbly by the veter an Eddie Arcaro, Hoop Jr. cov ered the heavy going of a mile and a quarter in 2 07, far off the record time of 2:01 25 'set by Whlrlaway in 1941. But the track was different to day after almost three continu ous days of rain and that time was not considered too bad. It anneared that the Hooper cham- Dion had nlenty left at the finish and could have bettered that time had it been necessary. For Arcaro it was his third Derby victory tying him in that respect with fcarle bancie ana Isaac Murphy. His previous win ners were Lawnn in ihjb ana Whirlaway in 1941. BOUT IS SOUGHT Wrestling fans have been hounding Promoter Mack Lillard for the past several weeks to match Antone Leone, the ape like spreader of terror from Oys ter Bay, New York, with George Wagner, self-styled toast of the coast for a bout at Mcdford ar mory. Lillard said Saturday that such a bout is likely and he has of fered terms which the bone crushers are said to be consider ing. Otis Clingman, veteran muscle mangier from Eugene, has expressed a desire to meet Wagner, Leone' or any other man Lillard may choose and will pos sibly be considered for a top spot if the Wagner-Leone negotiations fall through. Kenny Ackles, who dumped Wagner last week, and Georges Duscttc will also be on hand Thursday night, Lillard indicat ed. The complete card will be announced Monday. Use Mall Tribune Want Ada. Maier mid Swift singled and re lief pitcher Eaton doubled. Cald well replaced Haynes and fum bled Webb's sacrifice. Mayo then tripled and the ball game was over. The magic that makes stars out of ordinary ballplayers who take over center field for the New York Yankees worked again today for George Stain back, who stepped into John Lin dell's shoes and hit a three-run sixth-inning home run that broke the back of tho Boston Red Sox and led the Yanks to a 13 to 7 win. A ninth-inning single by Hoag ot the Cleveland Indians beat the Browns for the .second straight day by a 2 to 1 score.
