Hoop Jr., bred to the racing
purple of a Florida millionaire,
splattered over the muddy track
of Churchill Downis today to win
the 71st annual running of the
Kentucky Derby before a rain-
soaked throng of 65,000.
The fleet three-year-old of
Fred W, Hooper, who moved his
breeding farms to Alabama after
making his fortune as a contrac
tor around Jacksonville, Fla.,
went to the post the favorite and
ran up to that rating, leading
from the start and winning Go
ing Away by six lenRths.
Pot O' Luck, the second choice
in the betting, ran second and to
keep the odds running true to
form, Darby. Dieppe, the third
ranking favorite, was third in
this richest derby of all time.
The Margin between the sec
ond and third horses was a half
a length, with Air Sailor number
foiir in the field of 16.
That large entry gave Hoop
Jr., not only the blanket of roses
and glory that go with America's
primier horse race, but also $64,
860 $115 more than Pensive
won in the 1944 classic.

ered the heavy going of a mile
and a quarter in 2 07, far off the

mory. Lillard said Saturday that such
a bout is likely and he has of
fered terms which the bone
crushers are said to be consider
ing. Otis Clingman, veteran
muscle mangier from Eugene,
has expressed a desire to meet
Wagner, Leone' or any other man
Lillard may choose and will pos
sibly be considered for a top spot
if the Wagner-Leone negotiations
fall through.
Kenny Ackles, who dumped
Wagner last week, and Georges
Duscttc will also be on hand
Thursday night, Lillard indicat

pleted an all-victorious collegiate
track season tonight by winning
the 24th annual national inter
collegiate and field champion
ship at Marquette University
stadium with 62 points as Il
linois, defending champion, fin
ished second with 57 points.
It marked the first time in
NCAA history that Navy, or any
eastern team, has won the cinder
classic.
