EIGHT MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Wedneiday, June 8, 1945 Your Health and It's Care By DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D. Randan should eddreaa Inquiries toi Or. William Brady. ' 265 El Camlno Beverly HUU. CalM. SO YOU HAVE AU In an Instructive article on Food Fads and Fallacies pub lished In the Health Education Journal of the Los Angeles City Schools for December, 1 944, Drs. tV'.A .t. 1 Henry Borsook and Roger Stanton d 1 s -miss "Auto-In-t o x ica t Ion" with this illu minating com' ment: Before we Dr. Brady leave the sub ject of constipation, a word 'auto-intoxication.' It is a name given the notion that the body poisons itself by absorbing toxic substances from the intestine. The reader can be assured that what the body absorbs does no harm. The liver sees to that. Discomfort accompanying con stipation is the result of a nerv ous reaction. It has nothing to do with the absorpion of toxins." Dr. Borsook is professor of biochemistry in California IniU tute of Technology, and prob ably many readers are familiar with his excellent, popular book "Vitamins," published by VI lng Press, New York, '40. Contrast the scientific truth of that statement with the weird effect of he following statement made by Dr. John Harvey Kel logg of Battle Creek In his book "Colon Hygiene" published In Battle Creek in 1915: ". . . but it Is Impossible to have constipation without intes tinal autointoxication. The fact that the symptoms of toxemia do not occur in every case Is no evidence that they are not pre sent." Come to think of it I hope this will not set you worrying bout the matter the fact that we have closed the refrigerator door is no evidence that the little light inside is out. Suppose It burns on for hours and hours, using up electric power to no advantage. Maybe you had bet ter have a quick look before you go to bed, and make sure. Maybe it is not fair to go back 30 years to quote the Sage of Battle Creek in this fashion. I hate to do it, because I have al ways held the name and fame of Dr. Kellogg in high esteem. I still have a great deal of ad miration and respect for the teachings of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg. Riverside Ph. 3146 TOINTOXICATIOK? when I read his book "Colon Hygiene" and pencilled notes on the margins as I read, I thought the doctor was a bit obsessed by the "autointoxication" theory which was then of some vogue even among Tegular medical practitioners. Today, however, the view ex pressed by Drs, Borsook and Stanton in the passage above quoted fairly represents prevail ing medical opinion. The "autointoxication" idea is exploited now by Charlatans, diet humbugs, colon filling sta tions and vendors of certain laxatives. QUESTIONS St ANSWERS Scar I find an error in your itatement.
