FILL NEEDS OF LABOR, German prisoners of war have filled a definite labor need in this country and more are -needed here to meet critical labor shortages, according to Lt. Col. Lou J. Farber, officer in charge of the Camp White POW section. Farber emphasized the fact that prisoners here mostly Afrika Korpsmen with a few from the Normandy invasion, are treated firmly in full conformance with the Geneva Convention and are not coddled. Close censorship on the hand ling of prisoners of war has re sulted in much misunderstand ing, that is why the public will be given information concerning the POW program in the future, the speaker said. For the past two months non rationed foods have replaced ra tioned items on the menu for prisoners, and scarce soft drinks and cigarettes have disappeared from compound canteens. Profits from these canteens go to a fund for athletic equipment and cor respondence courses for prison ers. Radios without short wave are allowed and magazines are not restricted It is a case of no work, no eat with prisoners, Col. Farber told Rotarians. In occa sional cases of work strikes bread and water becomes the menu for strikers. German prisoners here are well disciplined and good, thor ough workers, Col. Farber said. The men are subject to the arti- I . H -IB- H . 1. .1 ' At All Dealers cles of war the same as Ameri can GIs. Only four cases of escape have occurred at the Camp White compound and those who partici pated were quickly returned. Among 300,000 German and Ital ian prisoners working in the U. S., only 273 had escaped and only 16 were supposedly at large when last checks were made. Without clothes and money, and with distances so great, the chance for successful escape is remote. No instance of sabotage has been recorded at Camp White, although about 150 men have been weeded out and re moved as trouble makers since the camp opened. Col. Farber outlined the meth od of organizing the prisoners into companies and the system of working in crops and indus tries when not in conflict with free labor. Eighty cents a day is the prevailing wage to POWs, while the government receives the balance between that wage and the prevailing labor scale in each area. More than $23,000,000 has been returned to the govern ment through prisoners' labor, the speaker said. Col. Farber, a veteran of the last war, was introduced by Mark A, Goldy, program chairman. Jacksonville Group Outlines Plans 7ol Work With Chamber Preliminary plans for organi zation of a group in Jacksonville to work with the Jackson Coun ty Chamber of Commerce were made at a meeting Monday night in Jacksonville. The new group, which desires to work in the gen eral interests of the city and county, plans activity in connec tion with tourist trade and along other civic lines. Attending the meeting from Medford were Frank Hull, man ager of the county Chamber of Commerce and Dwight Hough ton, finance chairman of the chamber.
