SIX MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Your Health and It's Care Br OR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D. Reader! ihould addteit Inquiries loi Dr. William Brady. 265 Bl Camino. Beverly Hills. Calif. T.OUTES OF INVASION OF Nobody knows whether acute anterior poliomyelitis uniiam mation of gray matter in the t 1 1 I. germ or a virus, but most pathologists or students of dis ease now be lleve it is A ' 1 caused by a ti trable virus, that is, a liv ing organism or germ too small to be vis ible even thru Dr. Brady the microscope and so small that it will pass through an ungiazea porcelain filter, which does not permit disease germs of ordinary size (such as the tubercle bacil lus, typhoid bacillus, diphtheria bacillus) to pass through. The virus is present In the mouth and nose secretions and the intestinal discharges of the patient. It may be transmitted to other persons by direct per sonal contact, by indirect contact with objects or surfaces contam inated by the patient, through the agency of flies which pick up the virus on their feet and trans port it to the next landing place, in polluted water (drinking water or water in which the vic tim swims or bathes) and some times, perhaps, in milk contam inated by a victim coming down with the disease or ill of it but unaware that the illness is infan tile paralysis. In most instances probably the virus invades by way of the lin ing of the nose and throat, through the olfactory (smell) nerves. In such cases the earlier., symptoms are those of cri (any of the common respira tory infections) until the indis position or illness can be identi fied, say as diphtheria, measles, flu, grip, coryza, meningitis or whatever it may prove to be, do you mind if we play fair and call it cri that is an honest admis sion that you don't know yet what you're coming down with but probably it is communicable, so ) Then recent studies by Drs. Alsenberg and Grubb (Jour. American Dental Association, May, '45) suggest that in some cases the portal of entry for the virus is a dental cavity which exposes the pulp. Prevention of Infantile paraly sis, in my Judgment, Involves these precautions: 1. Regard every alleged "cold" as suspicious and keep the child away from the person who has it, or the person away from the child. See that any cavities in the child's teeth are promptly filled by the dentist Tolerate no flies. 2. If you need to 68SID UP 02 64089! Use only Certified Milk, ordi nary milk that has been scalded (brought to boiling point for one minute;, or pas tuerized (heated to 145 de grees F. for 30 minutes). 5. Keep the child out of crowds. 6. If the child swims in a pool or in a natural bathing place patronized by many person?, see that the child wears suit able nose plugs while in the water to exclude water from the nose. Every swimmer should breathe through .the "mouth only, while in the wa ter. There is little or no dan ger of infection of any kind if this rule is carefully followed. Some swimmers find metal clips comfortable they hold the nostrils closed as a clothespin would. Others find a plug of lamb's wool or or ordinary cotton batting light ly smeared with any oil or grease comfortable to wear in each nostril while in the wa ter.
