Cogglns, 23, whose mother, Mrs. Myrtle Cogglns, re sides at Route 1, Medford, Ore gon, helped take this new ship into battle for the first time against the Japanese. Her guns sent two Japanese bombers crashing into the sea not far from Japan, and the car riers sheVdefended so well are free to launch their planes. 8C3 e Joe Glsh EC3 c Joe F. Gish, navy, was among recent guests at the United Nations Service Center on Union Station Plaia, Wash ington, D. C. The center Is pri marily designed, for transient personnel of the United Nations armed forcesofficer and en listed, men and women, and their immediate families. T'Sjt. John Latourrette TSgt. John W. Latourrette, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. La tourrette, Rt 1, Box 048, Med ford, Oregon, has just returned to the United States on furlough, after spending nine months In the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. He served with the 15th air force as radio operator on a B-24. He has to his credit 51 combat mission and 248 hours operational combat flying. . Pfe. Ralph McGonagle In a letter received from head quarters, Mediterranean Theater of Operations, Pfc. Ralph D. McGonagle .has been Informed that as a former member of the 2nd Bn., 350th infantry regi ment, he Is entitled to receive and wear the distinguished unit badge, sometimes known as the Presidential citation medal. The award was given for out standing achievement on the 6th army front In Italy during the time Pfc. McGonagle was a member of that army. Pfc. McGonagle returned home on rotation in November, 1944, after 23 months overseas duty. He was assigned to the army air corps and ii at present stationed at Keesler Field. Mis sissippi. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. McGonagle, How ard avenue. His wife resides with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sparks, Medford. Cpl. Larolr 8. Mason With U. S. Supply Forces In Belgium Cpl. Lavolr S. Mason, Trail, Is one of the truckers of the 332nd Engineer General Ser vice Regiment which has driven 30 month! on the continent with out a single accident. The driv en have traveled hundreds of thousands of miles transporting heavy materials to brldge-bulld-lng projects in France, Holland and Belgium. Ensign Stanley Jones Ensign Stanley C. Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley C. Jones, Sr., 812 Pennsylvania avenue, recently was mentioned in an ar ticle in the Christian Science Monitor of April 19. Ensign Jones, who is now battling Jap anese suicide planes at Iwo Shlma, near Okinawa, wai cred ited by his commander for abil ity to identify enemy or friendly plane In l25th of a second. En sign Jones is officer in charge of recognition training. Ho received his offi cer training at Columbia Univer sity, New York. His wife resides in Oakland, Calif., where she is employed by the navy stores department. Cpl. Daniel B. Bulebor With U. S. Service Forces in France Cpl. Daniel B. Bulebor, 1123 Court street, Medford, is a member of the Sette-Mille-Sette Enginer Construction battalion. It's an outfit composed of 16 American officers and men and over 1000 Italian volunteer la borers whose record in comple tion of heavy construction jobs has won letters of commendation from base section commanders both In southern and eastern France. Considered only a year ago as prisoners of war, the Italian vol unteers have learned under the supervision of the handful of Americans to operate heavy con struction equipment with a skill that played an important part in backing up the invasion of south ern France. Col. R. W. Broedlow With the Fifth Army, Italy-r-Col. R. W. Broedlow, 835 Haven street, Medford, was one of the men who took part in taking a vital peak in the recent battle of Italy. Acting under orders from Col. Broedlow, four ad vance scouts of the 361st Infan try Regiment, 91st "Powder Riv er" division, scaled the bald, scraggy head of the mountain and aided greatly in the break through toward Bologna. Pfc. Fred Smallwood 8th Army Group, Germany Pfc. Fred H. Smallwood, 613 South Central avenue, Medford, is one of the veteran doughboys of the 142nd Infantry Regiment, who experienced some of their hardest combat In more than 300 days of battle and broke through the Moder line at Oberhoffen, captured Wissembourg, and slashed their way through the strong Siegfried line defenses in the recent battle of Germany. Pfc. William Groat Pfc. William R. Groat, son of Ellen Groat, 527 Betty street, Medford, is now a patient at Mit chell U, S. Army Convalescent hospital at Campo, Calif. Ha served withe Engineers In New Guinea, Leyte and Luzon.
