Today again, this col. not too reluctantly, employs the scissors and the paste to fill the allotted space, and reprint, without per mission a bit of roblnology writ ten by Harold Haynes, the clever columnist of the esteemed As toria Astorlan-Budget. Any rob in; like a baby, is Interesting at all times, but when he happens to be a white robin, he is more so. Mr. Haynes': dissertation fol lows: 'Right on schedule time for the third year in a row, 'Whltey" the robin that has been working our Victory garden lot for worms and incidentally running every other, bird of every description out of the adjoining strawberry bed, is back on the Job again. You remember about .'Whltey' probably because this Isn't the first time, we mentioned' him here. '' ; "Three winters ago we first noticed him in particular about the place up ensington avenue way when, because of a wing injury, he stayed behind as the rest of the robins left for the southland. AU winter long in the rain and wind' he lived in the vine on the house. Fre quently from our window we've seen him virtually hanging on to the swaying, swishing branches of the vine by his teeth. "But he's an okeh bird again bit larger and handsomer than the average robin and easily identified because of a patch of white feather on the old injured wing. We really owe quite a bit to Whltey' you know, for last year and the year before that, while other folks were having their trouble with straw berry eating birds, there was nary one peck on a berry In our yards. More than once we've seen this cock robin riding herd on a whole flock of birds, in cluding a big, black crow, sit ting on the fence and swinging on the telephone wires over the garden waiting for a chance to swoop down and get themselves strawberry tidbit. "Whltey' himself is always on a strict worm diet but there's a bit of a complication this year. Naturally enough, probably, but disturbing nevertheless, is the fact that he has taken unto him self a mate. She's been too busy so far building a nest in the holly tree and taking care of her home duties to spend much time in our Victory garden, but the day will come, no doubt, when she'll have more time to devote to her own eating. And then we'll see what we shall see of the strawberry eating habits of this new bird that 'Whltey' is allowing the run of the place this year." Beyrouth, May 29 (U.R) Fighting between Syrian parti sans and French troops con tinued today and French tanks were sent to reinforce the garri son In the Syrian town of Hama, dispatches from Damascus re ported. (At San Francisco, the Svrian delegation to the United Nations conference issued a statement that many Syrians had been killed and wounded In Hama, and that over 30 had been , killed and 79 wounded In Aleppo). The common German roach, sometimes called the kitchen roach, Is the most frequent cock roach Invader of homes. It enters In cartons and packages of food or may migrate from on apart ment io anomtr. FRENCH, SYRIANS STILL BATTLING TuMdar. Mar 29, 1943 Editorial Correspondence San Francisco, May 26th. We are glad President Truman will sneak at the closing session. We wish he would come at. once, for there is no doubt of this the badly. ran It be that whiskers are coming back? There was a newspaper correspondent here by the name of St. John who wore them. And one can't walk up or down running into U. S. sailors with ear-rines. usually one. swinging As one of the girl correspondents confided the other day, she did not think she would CARE to marry a man who came back from the South Seas with ear-rings in his ears, one or two. It would take so MUCH xplalningl We had an uncle, a great-uncle and a grandfather who wore whiskers, two of them fought in the Civil War. And it was the great-uncle who never shaved them off because he said, when he returned home, no one objected a great deal of valuable time than he, to SHAVING. ' What he did with that valuable aside from inventing an improved horse-blanket which provided him with a meagre but apparently anything much but read the "Chicago Inter-Ocean" and walk down to the corner cigar-store and backl eeeee- One of the whiskered sailors la on display down at the Shreve Trader Horn when he graduated It is a matter of indifference to this department, but it would be interesting to have "General Jackson" and "Heine" Fluhrer, come back with magnificent hirsutal displays on their chins General J.'s might be small but e e Well, Secretary Stettinius has still smiling so perhaps there will be some news tomorrow. Here Is hoping. According to one of the Washington news-hounds they are now trying to build up Mr. Stettinius as a great success but it just won't click. Well, the present writer will reserve Judgment in that direction. As before stated, or Indicated, President Truman's Secretary of State has not impressed us very favorably. We can't get over the impression of a sophomoric disciple of Dale Carnegie out to make history or bustt But let's wait until this show is over. Secretary Stettinius is really the "key" man here whether you like him or don't. 'Russia is strong. Britain isn't weak. But the plain truth is, in the air, at sea and on the land, TOPSI And as before stated this is again whether we like It or don't, a POWER CONFERENCE! And our own Uncle Sam has Power. So the undersigned will not stage of the game. Far better wait until June 1st or thereabouts! One of our favorite contentions, that values depend upon expec tations has a bearing on the conference at its present stage. For this is certain: Those who expect to have this hence to a perfect document bursting full panoplied like Venus from the Brow of Job or was it a sea shell? are going to be terribly disappointed. . , - It simply can t happen with the the facts of life what they are. They talk about the new peace pact being similar to the Con stitution of the United States, only applied to 40 nations Instead of 48 states the greatest document of freedom and liberty ever con ceived by the mind of mortal manl ,, eeeee Not a chance brethren not a chancel At best It will be similar to the Articles of Confederation which preceded the Constitution and was failed to work. But It will be, we believe, a START, and all In all an improve ment over the League of Nations, certainly In one extremely Im portant way this will be true. Senate) will disown it, as was true of the League quarter of a century ago. And with the United States on the INSIDE looking OUT, in stead of on the OUTSIDE looking IN, well, that may well in it self make all the difference between failure and success! eeeee But don't expect TOO much! Don't expect an eight-cylinder and a super-charger pick-up, for ting it. Be sensible and realistic. Expect a second-band Jeep, that went through the Okinawa cam paign and is only hitting on one cylinder. And well, you might wake up better than that. (Then again you might not!)
