Mar Our Men and Women in the Nation's Service Proposed Budget For City of MeoWd For Year 1945-46 The following Is a budget of the estimated expenditures of the City of Medford, Oregon, for the year 1943-46, together with the estimated receipts from all sources ana tne levy 01 taxes reiuucu to raise the necessary revenue: LAVANE F GETS POSTHUMOUS OF Lavana Harold Ferrler, Hos pital Apprentice first class, USNR, Medford, has been pos thumously awarded the silver star medal "for conspicuous gal lantry and Intrepidity," the thir teenth naval district announces. His citation reads: "For con spicuous gallantry and intrepid ity while serving withe 2nd bat talion, 6th marines, during ac tion against enemy Japanese forces at Tlnian Island, Marianas Group, on August 2, 1944. Un hesitatingly volunteering to eva cuate casualties from an area swept by heavy enemy small arms fire, Ferrier boldly faced the withering barrage to care for the wounded then, organizing carrying parties of men from nearby foxholes, used Impro vised stretchers to carry the helpless marines to a safe area. Later that same day, he again risked his life to administer first aid to a seriously wounded com rade but, while performing his heroic act, was himself mortally wounded. Ferrier, whose mother lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was killed in action July 2, 1944. ' Lt. (g) Donald Root Lt. (jg) Donald G. Root, USNR, lias been awarded the bronze star for extraordinary heroism in line of profession as a mem ber of a reconnaissance party in an area occupied by enemy forces in the Pacific, according to a message received here re cently. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Root, Black Oak Drive. Hit wife, the former Doris Southwick, is now with him at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Lt. Root was quarterback on the 1937 Medford high school football team. Cpl. Thomas Dunnington Fifth Air Force, Philippines Corporal Thomas E. Dunnington, 24, aerial gunner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dunnington, Sr., of Jacksonville, has arrived In the Philippines and joined 6th air force's famous Jolly Rogers, old est Liberator outfit in the Pacific. Slgt Warrea Holbrook An Eighth Air Force Bomber Station, England Staff Sergeant Warren L. Holbrook, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leland J. Holbrook of 119 Crater Lake avenue, Med ford, has been awarded a third Oak Leaf Cluster to hit Air Medal, lt was recently announc ed by the commanding general, Eighth Air force. 'Sgt Holbrook is a graduate of the Medford Senior High school, where ha took an active part in the sports program as a member of the football, track and basket ball teams. Prior to his entry Into the Army Air forcea In 1941, he at tended the University of Oregon, Eugene. 1 Lt. Lanar Coverstone An Eighth Air Force Bomber Station, England A second Oak Leaf Cluster to his Air Medal has been awarded to First Lieut. Lan ar Coverstone, 19, Medford, for "meritorious achievement" while participating In bombing attacks against military and industrial targets In Germany. Lt Coverstone is the naviga tor on en Eighth Air force B-17 Flying Fortress in the 383th bombardment group. Son of Mrs. Ethel Coverstone. 119 Ivy street, Medford, he graduated from Medford High school and attended Oregon State college at Corvallis, Ore. S Sgt. Joseph McKay Oahu, Territory of Hawaii With hundreds of other walking patients, most of whom are bat tle casualties from history-making campaigns that have pushed the front toward Tokyo, S'Sgt. Joseph R. MacKay has been sta tioned at this Island base. As a convalescent in the Eight Station hospital, he is given opportunity to prepare himself for further service in the army or in civil life. Sergeant MacKay became 111 while serving on the island of Oahu, T. H. His mother, Mrs. J. R. MacKay, lives at Gold Hill. Pfc. Adalbart Nelmoyer With the 27th Infantry Divi sion on D-Day (Delayed) Pvt. First Class Adelbert J. Nelmoyer of b03 Edwards street, Medford, landed with the Appleknocker regiment of the fa:ned 27th In fantry Division in its initial as sault on an island of the Ryukyu group, 365 miles from the Japa nese mainland. A radio operator, Pfc. Adel bert Neimoyer entered the army in October 1943, and has served one year on overseas duty. He is entitled to wear the prized combat Infantryman's badge, Asiatic Pacific ribbon with one campaign star and the War de partments newest award, an arrowhead, given troops making an assault landing. His wife, Mrs. Virginia Nei moyer lives at the Medford address. T5 Nels Loderlund Santa Ana, Calif., April 1945 T5 Nels A. Loderlund, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nels Loderlund of 1716 N. Riverside street, Med ford, is crurently assigned to the AAF Redistribution Station No. 4 at Santa Ana army air base. T5 Loderlund, a clerk with the 8th air force, entered the service in December 1941, and went overseas in February 1942. He is entitled to wear the unit citation and the south west Pacif ic theater ribbons with three battle atari for his participation in the southwest Pacific theater. FO Martin LeRoy An Eighth Air Force Bomber Station, England Flight Officer Martin W. LeRoy, 19-year-old son of Mrs. Jack Crump, Star Ranger Station, Jacksonville, Oregon, has been awarded the air medal, it was recently an nounced by Colonel James S. Sutton, commanding officer of the veteran 306th bomb group. Flight Officer LeRoy received his decoration for "meritorious achievement" while serving as bombardier of a B-17 Flying Fortress during sustained com bat operations over enemy ter ritory.
