SIX MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Monday, May 21, 1945 Your Hsalth and It's Care By OR. WILLIAM BRADY M.O. Rsdrs ibould iddrtu inquiries lot Dr WillUm Brady. 266 El Camino Brrly Hill. Colli. WHAT TO TELL THE PATIENT A typical query: Physician said the patient had a murmur but did not explain what u i ji ii nasi mranh F ,7vg I know that Fif'1' some of the i4.m Dr Brady most successful doctors t o d ay owe their repi tations largely to their habit of explaining in s i m p I terms what they find wrong with the patient and why the pa tient should do so and so. found, in my parlous days of country practice, that if I was too lucid In explaining the situ ation to the patient or the pa. tient's family I'd lose the case to a competitor who was noted chiefly for what he did NOT tell the patient or the family. People of limited I. Q. took that tad turn attitude my competitor cul tivated as evidence of his deep Insight and mastery of the situation. ' When it comes to explaining things to the patient an honest doctor can't compete with the auacks of the present day. The auacks attract credulous custom' ers to their shops by bombarding the suckers with plausible ex Dlanations of aJl sorts of real and imaginary . complaints and all sorts of necessary and unneces sary treatment. People with a fair education cannot be so easily exploited by the quacks but how manv hleh nchool and col lege graduates have a fair edu cation? Darn few of them know even the rudiments tX. anatomy, physiology, hygiene, iwiltatlon IN THE DISTRICT COURT OF THE UNITED STATES FOR THE DISTRICT OF OREGON. In fact high school and college graduates are as naive and gullible In such matters as are ordinary folk I know, from the letters they write. The physician who mutters or mumbles about a "murmer when he examines a patient and then dismisses the patient or the candidate for the job or the ap plicant for an Insurance policy without explaining in simpn words lust what he think wrong, if anything, is a quack of the lowest type, I'd say. Gone is the day when doctors could "pronounce" things thus and so and get away with It. E cept in the moronic cigarette sales talk "eminent medical au thoritles" are less than a dime a dozen now. It Is a heartbreak' lngly slow process, but I believe we are gradually enlightening the nubile concerning the pre tensions of charlatans within and without the medical organs tlon.
