Dr. Bradr SCLERODERMA (HARDENING OF THE SKIN) I consulted many doctors who did not recognize my condition They thought It might be Ray naud s disease, adrenal gland trouble, gout, etc. Finally entered hospital f o two weeks' ob servation and study and they decided I had scleroder ma, which I gather Is rare. In the hospital and since they have given me courses of injections or "shots with no apparent benefit. My skin, especially on arms, chest and legs became brown, rougn and dry. In the hospital they made a skin biopsy to confirm the diagnosis, and informed me that the skin contained no calci um. They were unable to ae count for this lack of the normal amount of calcium In the skin in view of the fact that I was reared on a farm and have always in cluded in my diet plenty of milk, cheese, etc., containing calcium. There's pain in all joints. Hands have become hard and I can't close them. I am the more dis tressed by this because I'm deaf, and using my hands and fingers means a lot to me, both for sign language to our people and for writing to those who hear or to those who do not read the sign language. I don't mind being deaf, as I have been happy. (Signed That describes scleroderma as well as the medical books do. .The condition is a mystery to physicians. . I hesitate even to mention It In this column, lest some readers infer I pretend to know some thing about it that other doc tors do not know or that I pur port to be an "authority" or a "specialist." Now it I had scleroderma I'll tell you what I'd do: t. I'd keep my daily intake of . common table salt well above the average by selecting various salty Items for my diet and by taking a good pinch of salt along with drinking water, espe cially when the weather Is very warm. 2. I'd take 200,000 units of vit amin D every day for at least three months. I'd take enough thyroid extract to keep my basal temperature n o r m a 1 or a fraction of a degree abovel ' normal. (Basal temperature, I believe, Is as good a guide as the expensive basal me tabolism measurement, for thyroid treatment. I repeat, I dont know the eause of scleroderma and these suggestions are merely my vague notions about it. b answered. Send a stamped envelope bearing your address lor monograph on constipation. Answer Paint corn or callus once dally with solution of thirty graina of salicylic acid in one-half ounce of flexible collodion. In a week or ten days corn or callus will soften and may be wiped away. Unless pressure and friction are avoided the corn or callus will return. Cataract Some one advised my mother to out a pinch of graulated sugar in her eyes to dissolve cataract. Is this advisable? If not, can you recommend anything to remove cataract? (Mrs. S. B.) (U.R) Port Elizabeth promises to be South Africa's boom town, with plans now underway by General Motors for a $3,000,000 plant, for a lamp factory by British General Electric and a possible bus-building factory by Metro- Vickers. South Africa Combine is set ting up a large canning and jam manufacturing plant and a firm of British tanners has notified Port Elizabeth that they want land for a plant to be established as soon as possible Inquiries also have been re ceived from American firms ne gotiating for building roads and electric power plants. The decorations were won in battle by liason pilots and infan try unit observers. They went aloft In unarmed cub planes to spot Japanese strong-points for the artillery to blast or the in fantry to encircle and trap. Almost invariably the little planes, which whisk around only several hundred feet above the ground, are targets for vicious enamy fire. For consistently run ning such gauntlets, the 41st dare-alls won the awards custo marily associated with the air r -ps. Most especially proud are the 41sters that they fly and com pletely service their midget planes themselves. Lt. Gen Hae Army Air Field, Abilene, Tex. Second Lieutenant Gene C. Rae of 819 Bennett, Medford, Ore., has been assigned to an in tensive course in combat flying at this West Texas Combat Crew Training Station (Fighter), and in the near future will go over seas to a combat area. Lt Rae, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Rae, is a single engine fighter pilot station hospital there. He is graduate of the University of Oregon School of Medicine, Portland, Ore., and entered the service In October, 1944. His home address is P. O. Box 84, Medford, Oregon. Lorton, 27, of Medford, Ore., has arrived at Army Air Forces Re distribution Station No. 2 in Mi- ami Beach for reassignment pro cessing after completing a tour of duty outside the continental United States. He was a Jap anese . risoner for two and one- half years. Sergeant Lorton was a photo- laboratory technician and gun ner during 38 months in the Asiatic-Pacific theater and was awarded the purple heart. He is the so- of Mr. Edward E.
