Wayne H Jackson of Eagle Point, Oregon is back on duty again laying wire for the 1st Bn.. 394th Inf, after 12 days as a prisoner of war. ' Jackson was laying wire near th Rhine river town of Hon rilngen with two buddies when three Jerries popped out from behind some bushes. "We had nnr arms full of wire and the Krauts had three rifles sticking down our throats. They had the droD on us. We had to do what trev said." remarked the Ore- gonian. "Walking along a trail to ward the German lines, we were nnttert hv American troops. Jackson went on. "They opened un. and we all hit the ground Two of the Germans were hit and both of my buddies were wounded. Then more Jerries came racing up and hustled us down the trail and out ol sigm of our troops. Forced to Hike The first two days Jackson trekked 30 miles to a PW cage on one Wehrmacht ration and a little water. Then when the First Army broke out of 'the Remagen bridgehead, the Ger mans started marching all their PW's eastward. To minimize greatly feared attacks by U. S. fighters and "Jabos" (iigmer- bombers) the Heinles marched their prisoners under cover of darkness. Two days before Jackson was liberated, spearheading u. & Ttnkj lacked only four miles of catching up with tha PW col umn. But the prisoners were forced to the rear again. "Our hopes of being freed had been built up so long that when the tanks of tha 7th Armored Division, working with the 99th Dlv., did roll in, we couldn't be lieve it." said Jackson. "We just stood there and stared with un believing eves at the tanks as they coughed and sputtered down the road. Maybe soma of us smiled a little. We were too weak to cheer." Division and awarded the Com bat Infantryman Badge for ac tual participation in combat against the enemy on the Fifth Army front In Italy, Pfe. Charles Learning With the 83rd Infantry Divi sion in Germany Pfe. Charles L. Learning of General Delivery, Talent, Ore., has been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for displaying exemplary con duct in action against the enemy. He is the son of Elizabeth M. Learning, General Delivery, Ta lent, Ore. Lt. John Saulsberry An Eighth Air Force Bomber Base, England First Lieuten ant John M. Saulsberry, 23, of Jacksonville, navigator on an Eighth Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress, has been awarded the Air Medal. The award was for "meritor ious achievement" during bomb ing attacks by the 38l)th Bomb. Group against Nazi war Indus tries and military targets In co operation with Allied ground forces. He Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F Saulsberry of Jacksonville. He had been attending Oregon Stale College before entering the AAF in August, 1943. Cpl. Warren Holbrook An Eighth Air Force Bomber Station, England Corpor: i Warren L. Holbrook, 21-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Leland J Holbrook. 119 Crater Lake ave nue, Medford, Oregon, has been decorated with tha Air Medal It was announced recently by the commanding general, Eighth Air Force. Corporal Holbrook is a grad uate of the Senior High School, Medford, Oregon, where he took an active part in the sports pro gram as a member of tha track football and basketball teams. Prior to his entry Into the Army Air Forces on November 29. 1041. he attended the Unl versity of Oregon, Eugene, Ore gon. Bomb Group, a veteran unit with more than 290 missions to its credit. A graduate of Grants Pass high school, the 23 year old Medford airman was employed by the Lockheed Aircraft Corp. at Bur bank, Calif., prior to entering tha service In February, 1943. He Is married, Mrs. Espey living at the Riverside Street address. His parents live at Salem. The total number of Chinese living permanently In other countries was estimated in 1939 to be 7,838,888. PIRATE PICTURE Hollywood, April 28 (U.R An alleged motion picture piracy ring, which marketed stolen films throughout tha world, espe cially In Soutj America, is being Investigated by federal and state officials, lt was revealed today. U. S. Attorney Charles H. Can- said Information gathered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation will be placed before the Federal Grand Jury, and secret indict ments may be returned. In some cases, it was said, a Hollywood film would be rushed away after a preview, filmed on a master negative, and 18 milli meter prints were distributed for home consumption In this country before the rightful dis tributors could market their product. The commercial reels would be returned to the theater within a few hours. 1 Some of the pirated films, Carr said, found their way Into U. S. army posts in this country. THE GRANGE Upper Rogue Orange Plans for a dance were made at the last meeting of Upper Rogue Grange. The dance will be held at the hall April 28 at 8 p. m., with Gibson's orchestra furnishing music. Credited with more than 850 days in combat, the battalion has fired 119.000 rounds in the Italian campaign alone.
