Brown, who has been a patient in a Portland hospital the past month, where he underwent an operation, returned to Medford yesterday. The sheriff, reported to be improved, plans a month's convalescence before returning to his desk. e e KOO To Meet Jackson Coun ty Keep Oregon Green commits tee will hold its first meeting of the season at the Jackson county Chamber of Commerce office to morrow afternoon at 4 o'clock. Resigns Resignation of Vern Johnson, outside maintenance man of Medford public schools, was reported today by E. H. Hedrick, school superintendent. Johnson, who has been em ployed br the schools since his arrival here from South Dakota three years ago, will enter the armed services in the near fu ture. e e la Medford Howard R. Although it seems impossible for Jackson county to reach its quota of 125 tons, a creditable showing has been made and quality of the clothing is prac tically 100 per cent serviceable, according to Reginald A. Kiwanls, Rotary and Lions clubs have rendered valuable service in aiding the drive, Stagg said. E. H. Hedrick, city superintend ent of schools, said this morn ing that city schools have turned in a total of 6,582 pounds of clothing. Lincoln school students turned in 602 pounds, 1,368 pounds from Jackson school, 658 pounds from Roosevelt school 1,042 pounds from Washington school, 819 pounds gathered by high school students and z.osd pounds by students of the junior high school. Wright of Shaker Heights, Cleveland, O., have been elected lo member ship in the Academy of Surgery of France, which is comparable to the Royal College of Surgeons in England. Gen. Williams of the 36th cavalry reconnaissance troops was killed in action March 23 somewhere In Ger many, according to information received by his father, C. J. Williams, Route 1, Box 650C, recently. The corporal enlisted In the cavalry in November of 1942 and arrived overseas In March of 1843. He served first in North Africa and was with the 6th army during the landing at Sa lerno. After fighitng at Cassino and Anzio and participating in the march on Rome, Cpl. Wil liams was assigned to the 7th army and helped establish the beachhead in southern France in June of 1944. The deceased was born June 30, 1923, in PocatoUo, Ida., and came to Medford in 1930 with his family. He attended Trail and Medford schools, graduat ing in 1941, and was employed at Camp White before entering the army. Survivors, In addition to his father, are a brother, Bob. of Prospect; another brother, War ren, fireman first class in the navy, and three sisters, Esther Schraeder, Gladys Winningham and Mildred Miller, all of Med ford. Henry C. Dickson, president of the Baker Hotel, says perhaps the worst shortage is that of pepper. "People run off with our pep per shakers," he said, "We wouldn't care too much If they Just took the pepper, but we're running out of shakers." Light-fingered guests, always a hotel problem, are worse in war-time, according to Manager Scott Hardy of the Texas Hotel Assn. "They take the sheets and pil low cases now," he said. "They even walk out with blankets, ash trays and the soap. "Some of them even steal our matches." The National Hotel Assn., he said, tried to work out a deal under which laundries would re move towels with hotel identifi cation from private laundry bun dles and send them back.
