Eventually the young woman found that from time to time when she was tired and got cold say driving her car on a cold morning several fingers would become numb and white and after a half hour or jo when the circulation returned gradually they were very painful. This happened even on summer mornings If It was at all cool. Dead fingers Is the common name for it. Raynaud's disease is the medical name for it. The peculiar character of the skin trouble that this young wo man had before the Raynaud's disease developed suggested to her alert physician that chronic arsenic poisoning might be the cause. She had certainly been exposed to arsenic for years the greenhouse connecting with the flowershop used arsenical Insecticides tor spraying. So the doctor gave the young woman an Injection of one-half gram (about 7V4 grains of sodium thiosulphate (hyposulfite) Into a vein. This caused a marked In crease in the amount of arsenic excreted In the urine In the next twenty-four hours. Normally there is a minute amount of ar senic in the urine anyway, but such an injection of thlosulfate would not greatly increase the arsenic In the urine of the nor mal Individual. Thereafter the doctor gave the patient similar Injections of thlo If il 'Mr Allies' Supply Problem Key To Length of Nazi Holdout (The German arm In the wast Is being captured at the rata of a division a day. Allied tank spearheads are riddling the front. Victory la in tha air. but whan It will matarialisa Is an open ques tion. Boyd D. Lewis, European news manager of the United Press, surveys tha ituatlon from his vantage post at supreme allied head quarters at Paris.) By Boyd D. Lewis United Press Correspondent Paris, April 2. OJ.PJ When will the war in Europe end? The nearest thing to an expert opinion available at supreme Hied headquarters Is that the inal collapse of German resist ance is still considerable dis tance away. How far away will depend upon our ability to keep supplies flowing across the Rhine on which not a single permanent bridge remains and streaming through a hostile countryside to our speeding armored spear heads. Despite their losses, the Ger mans still have possibly 1.250V 000 troops In the west, of which 250,000 are In combat units. Nasi Morale Low They are a whipped army, as Gen. Dwlght D. Eisenhower said Their morale Is a far cry from what It was a year ago or even last December. But they still are killing Americans, British and Canadi ans and they will continue to kill then? for many weeks to come. Adolf Hitler is still very much in the saddle, with dreaded Gestapo Chief Helnrich Himm ler beside him, according to best opinion here. A captured Ger man psychological warfare off) cer told me at the front recently that Hitler has ruled uncnal longed since the purge following the attempt on his life last July This officer also maintained that the Germans never would use gas. Hitler, who suffered from gas In the last war. would not permit Its use, he said. The Germans' worst problem Is transportation. Largely be cause of allied air raids, German railways are broken and unus able. Gasoline shortage hampers use of motor vehicles. Sams Valley Sams Valley, April 2. Any one may take thlosulfate Internally, In doses of, say, ten grains, dissolved in at least half a glassful of water flavored with syrup or sugar and fruit juice, twice a day, after food, for, say three days each week prefer ably alternate days for a period of six to ten weeks. The following manifestations may spell chronic arsenic poison ing: Chronic or recurring "ecze ma, garlic-like odor of the sweat, red injected eyelids or constant Irritation and Itching of edges of edges of eyelids, odd patches of tingling, numb ness or loss of sensation in the skin here and there, otherwise inexplicable attacks of neuri tis,' odd weakening or paresis (partial paralysis) of one or another muscle group, severe outbreaks of herpes ("cold sores))), or a peculiar waxy pallor. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS How to Measure 754 Grain! To save wear and tear, postage, time and everything, here Is a way to measure lk grains: put one-half ounce of the powder Into a four ounce vial, or one ounco Into a half pint bottle, then fill the bottle up with water. When the salt or powder Is all dissolved each teaspoonful will contain approximately 7 If, grains. Of course, this would npt be a satis factory wav to measure radium, but for ordinary chemical or medicinal salts It Is practical provided the chemical or salt Is soluble in water Alcohol Not for Children Would tt be harmful to a child years old to let him drink a glass of beer at Dedume, as a ionic? NEW PROVINCE OF OF JAP BUTCHERY TOLD IN MANILA By Richard G. Harris United Press Correspondent Manila, March 31. OJ.PJ An official report revealed today that the Japanese in their rape of Manila butchered helpless women and children with bayo nets, shot men by the hundreds and wantonly destroyed places of worship. The atrocities were brought to light in a mass of documentary evidence furnished by the people who survived the ordeal and by American military personnel. Major Views Sites Perhaps the most damaging affidavit was that of Major David V. Blnkley, a 37th divl slon medical officer. He person ally Inspected many mass atro city scenes, but the worst was near the Manila railway station where he saw the bodies of 119 men, women and children all shot and bayonetted. Many of the adults and some of the older children were tied before they were shot, Binkley said.. The very small children were killed without being tied At De La Salle college, Bink ley found the bodies of 70 men. women, and children of various ages scattered over the grounds. Some of the women were pregnant," he testified. "The breasts of one woman had been cut off. All the bodies were pierced by several bayonet wounds. Children Not Spared "At the Campos residence on Taft avenue, 45 women, most of whom wore slacks, were found Evidence of assault was appar ent on many of the women and several women had been pierced through the genital organs by Jap bayonets. Counted among tne group were several children all of whom were cruelly bayo netted." At the rear of a gasoline sta tton, Blnkley found 48 bodies eight of them women, all with the hands tied behind the back Nearby lay a mother and her two children. The woman was face down with an arm around each child. They had been slash ed to death apparently with a saber. Col. J. D. Frederick, of the 129th Infantry, revealed that an estimated 400 bodies were found In three different places in the Fort Santiago sector. Death hau resulted from shooting, bayonet ting or starvation. The majoritv of the victims were men from 25 to 45. Dead In Layers All died with their hands tied behind their backs and theii bodies were piled layer aftei layer as the Japanese riddled them with bullets. A Filipino nurse disclosed how a Japanese soldier. Irked bv a baby's cries, shot her In the legs, jabbed his bayonet Into the Infant's head and then shot the child's mother and aunt.
