EIGHT MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday. March 31. 194S Your Health and Its Care Br OR WI) MAM BRADY M. D. Headars should addrau Inqulrlai tot Or. William Brady 26 El Camlno BavarJy HUH Calli. LEFT HOLDING THE TAG Recently I bad blood Count taken at laboratories the report of which reads: Erythrocytes. 4,080.000 Hemoglobin 78 Leucocytes 61S0 Two days later hat' an o t h e r blood, count taken at laboiatory and the report of this one show Or Brady Erythrocytes Hemoglobin , ed: - 3,592,000 78 Leucocytes .. 4,250 I know I am anemic but I am bewildered by the difference be- ' tween these two tests: (Mrs. M. B. L.) The n o t at 1 o n "Hemoglobin 78" both rnports. evidently from different laboratories. Is rema.-k able. It probably means 78 that is, the blood contains a lit tie over three-fourths of the Iron coloring matter that the blood ' of a healthy person should con tain IF there are 5 million red . blood corpuscles (erythrocytes) per cubic millimeter (approxi mately I '60th or a drop), in view of the 12 difference in the number of erythrocytes tn the two reports it Is odd, not to say suspicious, that precisely 78 something or other of hemoglo bin was found in both counts. I say suspicious, because if the hemoglobin estimate was made color comparison method the same specimen of blood may be read as 100 hemoglobin with one Instrument and 80 or even only. 73 on another. Besldis being the red coloring matter of blood the hemoglobin - Is the carrier of oxygen from the lungs to all the functioning cells and organs, and of carbon dioxide from the functioning cells and organs back to the i lungs for excretion. So the amount or proportion of hemo : globln In the blood Is important In every instance. In the normal individual there re usually 7000 or 8000'leuco ' cytes (white blood corpuscles) , per cubic millimeter of blood. When the number of leucocytes ' is as low as 6000 well, it is a good , sign that the individual should begin to consider serious- ; ly the idea of consulting a phy . slcian. Among the things such a low leucocyte count suggests ' are (1) some overwhelming in fection such as septicemia, un dulant fever, malaria, influeifta, (2) onset of measles, typhoid fev er, (3) disease involving blood forming tissues spleen, bono , marrow, lymph glands, (4) pa tient has been taking . a sulfa ! drug, barbiturates, acetanlllde or - ether blood destroying drug. Now I hope this Is enough to Impress upon you, . Ha'am, the , foolishness of having a blood test or examination made on your own. After all, what have you got?
