FREEDOM AFTER E Fred Marrett and wife, Mar garet Maxlne, held In the coun ty Jail since last September, eharged with breaking and en tering to steal drugs, were re leased yesterday following dis missal of the charge against them by Judge James W. Craw ford after a conference with Dis trict Attorney George W. Nell-aon. , At recent trial of the Mar- rett's the jury failed to agree, Dismissal was due to inability of the state to produce its main wit ness, Dr. R. W. Clancy, serving term at McNeill's Island, who was hot permitted under federal rules to come here as a witness. The Marretta were Indicted for breaking and entering Dr. Clan ey's office late last August, and were witnesses against him In his federal court trial. Judge Crawford warned the Marretts to abstain from the use of drugs In the future or they would find themselves again in the tolls of the law. During their long county Jail stay they have broken the habit and gained in weight, officials said. The court commented that he had more hope for the woman than her mate. John M. Little, of Rogue River with a former prison record charged with larceny from rooms In the Columbia Hotel In Ash land last summer, plead guilty and was sentenced to three years in state prison. : The cases of James Ferguson, charged with passing forged checks In this city, and Eugene Dorough, south end of the valley logger, charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. were continued by Judge Craw ford. Dorough is charged with passing checks In Ashland, Phoe nix, Talent, and this city, In the sum of $350. Ferguson Is spe cifically charged with the pass tng of a $34 check on Mel Young er of this city last summer. He was arrested and returned here from Redding, Calif., two months go. MISSOURI ADOPTS NEW STATE CODE St. Louis, Feb. 28 (U.PJ Missouri had a new constitution today. The new code, adopted by a majority of more than two-to-one In yesterday's special ballot ing, replaces the original one approved in 1879 and provides for separate maintenance of schools for white and colored children. Unofficial returns from 3.310 of the state's 4,843 precincts gave: For the constitution 228,363. Against 149,221. A number of far-reaching gov ernmental reforms were written Into the new code. Mexico City, Feb. 28 (U.R) The costs are high by Mexican standards, but there are no war time shcltdges of necessities or luxuries in this capital. The city la filled with Amer ican tourists eating big, Juicy steaks, drinking bonded Bour bon and Scotch, sightseeing in automobiles without concern about gasoline rationing, and paying stiff bills at dozens of night clubs. They are joined by a few rich Mexicans, but the living standard for the masses is low. The con trast smacks the visitor sharply. The exchange rate is favorable five Mexican to one United States dollar. But inflation has taken away much of that ad vantage. Living costs are esti mated at two times pre-war levels. American tourists are loaded with money to spend In either the most expensive places or in the typical Mexican markets where prices, by U. S. standards, are low. Delegates to the Inter-Amer ican Conference now In session here found: Luxuries Plentiful Unlimited supplies of popular brands 6f cigarettes at 25 cents (U. S.) a package; Mexican cig arettes at 12 cents. Steaks T-bone, sirloin, filet mignons at $1.29. And up. A one pound sirloin, three inches thick, in a top quality restau rant brings eight pesos (about $1.65). Automobile!; Show windows are filled with new cars and the used car lots have a big stock a 1942 middle-sized car costs about $2,600. The streets are filled with automobiles and most of them are relatively new. Gasoline There is no ration ing. Mexico produces her own but there is no attempt to limit its use to essential driving. Liquor The only question Is "what brand do you want?" Johnnie Walker Black Label and Vat 69 Scotch are plentiful with prices running from 40 to 60 pesos ($8 to $12). And on the same day, Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlin observed their gold en wedding anniversary. Mexican "Racetrack Enlarges Program Mexico City, Feb. 28 (U.R) The Mexico City race track will expand Its program to four days of racing a week after March 6, "because present conditions war rant it," President Bruno Pagliai said today. Racing after that date will be held on Tuesday, Thursday, Sat urday and Sunday, he said. The cards will include nine races with special events for residents of Mexico who own horses.
