Cost of Living Increases.
Mexico City, Feb. 28 (U.R)
The costs are high by Mexican
standards, but there are no war
time shcltdges of necessities or
luxuries in this capital.
The city la filled with Amer
ican tourists eating big, Juicy
steaks, drinking bonded Bour
bon and Scotch, sightseeing in
automobiles without concern
about gasoline rationing, and
paying stiff bills at dozens of
night clubs.
They are joined by a few rich
Mexicans, but the living standard
for the masses is low. The con
trast smacks the visitor sharply.
The exchange rate is favorable
five Mexican to one United
States dollar. But inflation has
taken away much of that ad
vantage. Living costs are esti
mated at two times pre-war
levels.
American tourists are loaded
with money to spend In either
the most expensive places or in
the typical Mexican markets
where prices, by U. S. standards,
are low.
Delegates to the Inter-Amer
ican Conference now In session
here found:
Luxuries Plentiful
Unlimited supplies of popular
brands 6f cigarettes at 25 cents
(U. S.) a package; Mexican cig

Steaks T-bone, sirloin, filet
mignons at $1.29. And up. A
one pound sirloin, three inches
thick, in a top quality restau
rant brings eight pesos (about
$1.65).
Automobile!; Show windows
are filled with new cars and the
used car lots have a big stock
a 1942 middle-sized car costs
about $2,600. The streets are
filled with automobiles and most
of them are relatively new.
Gasoline There is no ration
ing. Mexico produces her own
but there is no attempt to limit
its use to essential driving.
Liquor The only question Is
"what brand do you want?"
Johnnie Walker Black Label
and Vat 69 Scotch are plentiful
with prices running from 40 to
60 pesos ($8 to $12).
Night Life It's booming even
