THE HOPELES 8 PROGNOSIS The other day I said that in exceptional cases the prospect of cure or great improvement is In deed hopeless. Hopeless means having no expectation of lasting im provement or recovery of health. In the early days of my country prac t i c e a col league in an other village Dr. Brady caned a BUr- . surgeon from the city to oper ate on a boy with acute appen dicitis, and me to give the anes thetic. When we reached the boy's bedside we found him, as the three of us were certain, moribund from general peritoni tis (formerly known as "inflam mation of the bowls" the con sequence of rupture of the in flamed or gangrenous appendix that makes appendicitis so dan gerous when surgical treatment is too long withheld. While we were considering how best to tell the parents that It was too late to attempt the operation the boy's father solved the problem by announcing suddenly that he would not consent to operation. So we three doctors the city surgeon, the boy's family doctor with some years of experience, and I, the tyro fresh from the hospital and, as you may well imagine, pretty cocky about my knowledge of all the latest wrinkles in the doctor trade expressed our great sympathy for the family and retired, with a hopeless prognosis we gave the boy not more than 24 hours to live. In similar circumstances I'd give the same prognosis today. Probably 99 out of 100 physic ians or surgeons would. - Nevertheless the boy made an excellent recovery and grew up to vigorous young manhood, only to lose his life finally in a railway accident. ' In exceptional cases I do not believe it would do any good to mention just which cases but cases of a chronic or long en during and progressively worsen lng character I believe the physician should administer or prescribe whatever sedative, nar cotic or "dope." if you please, seems, to give the patient any surcease or comfort, and with' out recard for habituation. More over I say it Is wicked and cruel to impose any federal, state or municipal restriction upon the administration or prescription oi any such drug or narcotic by tne attending physician in sucn cir cumstance. The attitude of the federal. state and local government au thorities is and for years has been eaul vocal and in many in stances downright dishonest in respect to the control of the nar cotic traffic. It would be better to let a hundred criminals escape punishment than to ha rass or unjustly charge one reputable practitioner with im proper use of such drugs in his practice. I believe, to take calcium gluconate and dicalcium phosphate, of course always with vitamin D, which Is essential for utilization and retenUon of calcium. , Carbolic Acid Please advise me the correct aver age dose of carbolie add In water. (F. G. r.) Answer U. S. P. aavs avorage dose of pure phenol (carbolic acid) Is two 'grains, or say two or three drops of liquefied "carbolic." of course di luted with plenty of water. I doubt that taking carbolic acid Internally every day for 40 years, as you say you have done, has anything to do with Immunity against any Kind of disease. I should not advise taking carbolie acid in any dose for any purpose. Dentist Is No Bogey I've always been afraid the dentist cleaning teeth will take off the enamel. Is It safe? Do you believe in filling teeth? (C. C.) Answer I look again to see wheth er your letter is dated 1B49. It Is not only safe, it is the only way the teeth can be kept clean, brush or no brush. I believe in filling even the baby teeth, If cavity is discovered. For the sake of health, comfort, good looks and long life it pays to learn about the teeth. Hoffmeyer died yesterday. Hoffmeyer, whose weight be gan to climb after a siege of pneumonia in 1925, at one time weighed 700 pounds. Prospect Prospect, Feb. 28 Announce ments were received here last week telling of birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nichols of Greenville, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Nichols are well known here. The former graduated from the local high school and the latter taught the second and third grades here, for several years. Mr. Nichols Is now a member of the Greenville high school fac ulty. Mrs. Delia Tex accompanied Mrs. Blanche Frlsbee to Pros pect, Feb. 20, and spent the after noon with her sister, Mrs. Mary E. Grieve. - Earl Ulrlch made a business trip to Montague, Calif., Feb. 21. Mrs. Clara UHly, who has been visiting her brother and slster-In-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jantzer at Central Point, arrived here Feb. 20, and will keep house for her oldest brother, Frank X. Jantzer. Frank Doty, timber faller and bucker for the George L. Jant zer Lumber company., sustained deep saw cuts in the knuckles of two fingers of his right hand, Feb. 22.
