Al ford, 517 W. XOth street. He is enrolled in the navy V-12 pro gram and is home between semesters. Seab.ee Home L. W. Robin son, who has been overseas 21 months with the Seabees, is spending a 30-day convalescent leave with his family at 524 Pearl street. Robinson has served at Hawaii and came to the states from Guam, where he has been on duty for some time. Valley Unit To Meet Evans Valley Extension unit will meet at the home of Lenora Winters Friday, Mar. 2. Building Permits Building permits were issued by the city superintendent's office yesterday to G. W, Rose, 433 Union street, to erect a cottage at an approxi mate cost of $200, and Clara M Barry, 124 North Columbus street, to remodel her residence at a cost of about $200. Navy Inductees Registrants of selective service local draft board one inducted into the navy at Seattle recently were Virgil A. Swanson and Frank W. Faw- cett. The latter had volunteered for immediate induction accord ing to information received here. Almo C. Yeary, a transfer from a local board in Pomona, Calif., has also been inducted into the navy. Couple Leaves Major and Mrs. Bruce B. Hammond left Medford Friday after making a short visit here with the major's parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Ham mond, Fern Valley Road. They continued to Seattle to visit Mrs, Hammond's mother, Mrs. Sigurd Hage, and later will return to the marine base at San Diego where Major Hammond will re port for duty. The major recent ly returned to this country after many months of sea duty and his marriage to Miss Mary Hage took place January 22. . e Officer Returns Lt. Dowd L. Cooper, former Medford resi dent and member of the Med ford national guard unit, arriv ed in San Francisco Saturday after spending an extended time in the South Pacific with the air corps. Lt. Cooper, who graduat ed from Medford senior high school with the class of 1930, left here in the fall of 1940 with the national guard. After a year at Ft. Lewis he transferred to the air corps with which he has since served. The officer will spend most of his leave with his wife and 14-months-old daughter who are residing in Salem with Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Moyer, sis ter and brother-inlaw of Lt. Cooper and also former Med ford residents. Lt. Cooper's daughter was born while he was serving overseas. He was cited to appear for a hear ing March 2. . e e e Trucks Collide Logging trucks driven by V. L. Cumbee, Jacksonville, and Henry Holl- man, were involved in a traffic accident Monday morning on the Crater Lake highway causing $250 damage to Cumbee's truck, according to an accident report on file today. The accident oc curred when Cumbee attempted to pass the other truck as it was pulling on to- the highway, ac cording to Cumbee's report. Amount of damage to Hollman's truck was not reported. Oil Flows Out of Family Water Tap West Nyack, N. Y., (U.R) When Mr. and Mrs. Arthur M Finnessey of Sickletown Road turn on their water faucets they get fuel oil, the kind they use in their furnace. " It first happened on Dee. 27 when Finnessey drew himself a tumbler of oil at the kitchen sink. Experts have established that oil was seeping into the 300 foot artesian well. The source, however, they could not determ ine. Meanwhile the Finnesseys are lugging water from neigh bors' homes. Finnessey is a Uni ted Press teletype operator. San Francisco Bay is the larg est landlocked harbor in the world. Quinine Bark From Latin America Is Shipped To States Minneapolis, Minn. (U.PJ Eight hundred tons of quinine bark are being received monthly In the United States from Cen tral and South American sources, says Parker Anderson, of the University of Minnesota farm staff, who spent eight months searching for new supplies in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and Guatemala. Anderson recalls that quinine originated in the high altitude jungle countries of South Amer ica in the 16th century, and says this is evidence that excellent quality is possible, despite the fact that Java became the source of supply for 95 per cent of the world's quinine before the Jap anese conquest of that island. The university scientist says. however, that advances in re search point to the possibility of producing a synthetic quinine even better than the natural va riety, v KILLER AWAITS DEATH BY UTAH FIRING SQUAD Salt Lake City, Feb. 27 (U.R) James J. Roedl, 27-year-old Oklahoma City transient, today took his place in death row at the Utah state prison to await execution by a firing squad April 8. Roedl was sentenced yester day for a hammer slaying of Mrs. Agnes Abigail Williams, ban Leandro, Cal., school teach er, October 12, 1942. S. army hospital ship St. Mihlel ran aground during a lashing storm off Bermuda month ago with 500 patients aboard. The patients were safe ly removed. The incident occur ed January 26, but was revealed by the war department only to day. The St. Mihiel is now In drydock at the Charleston, S. C navy yard.
