Barber's Observations in my day, I've experienced flood, fire, famine and pesti lence, but at least I've been spared being the mother of Phil ip. To have been the mother of Philip would have been one affliction too many. For Philip Is social in the ex treme end has a fuller schedule than many a society matron. School would be a side Issue were it not for the extra curri cular activity which goes with it. For one thing, he's cashier ot the school s cafeteria. He s also pa trolman at street crossings dur ing the times when children are going to or leaving school. He plays the trumpet in' the school orchestra, Is a Boy Scout and a regular attendant of Sunday school. The two latter Interests would provide enough social outlet for the average boy, what with their banquets, hikes and parties, But the real passion of his life Is his paper route. Somehow at the end of the month this costs his parents money, though even they haven't been able to fiqure out why. They emplore Philip to give up his mad ambition for a business career; offer to give him an allowanca which will cover the purely Imaginary pro fits of the business but he keeps on delivering papers. The monthly collecting he re gards as Incidental and not until financially embarracsed will he go out and round up a few long over due payments. Those near est his home often get paid up In full; In fact one patron vows he's paid up until April, Ho never delivers his papers alone but Is always accompanied by a group of his cronies. They have a get routine which they follow deliver a paper, stop for a round of marbles; deliver another paper, have another marble bout. This lengthens to two hours a job which could be done In 45 minutes. We've finally decided It's the paper pouch Philip has to wear which makes paper delivery so fascinating he can't give it up. in a way, thtt pouch is a uni form, Hung about his neck, It sets him apart from other boys who do not l.ave paper routes Too, we think It is the uniform which makes him such an ar dent Boy Scout. Grown, Philip will be a "Join er"; there's no doubt about that Especially will he loin such or ganlzatlong which will provide him with something extra to wear; especially with something to drape about his neck.
