TEN MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Wadntidr. Tb. 21. 1845 Your Health and Its Care Br DH- WILLIAM BRADY. M. D. Readari should ddrM InqulrlM tot Dr. William Brady 265 El Camlno. BararlT Hllli. Calil. i 80 YOU'RE TA Injection of medicine under the skin (hypodermic subsutane ous) or, by plunging the syringe needle straigni in to the hilt 80 t h a t the liquid Is in J e c t e d Into muscle this is generally the simpler, less pa infill way or Intra venous Injec tion by Insert ing the needle into a vein (as Dr. Brady in taking blood for a Wassermann test or taking blood from a donor) has some advantages and some dis advantages. Advantages of hypodermic administration are accuracy of dose, rapidity of action, avail ability (when for some reason medicine cannot be given by mouth or Is' not retained by the patient.) Disadvantages of hyp odermic administration are com paratively unimportant the chance of lnfeption due to ignor ance or failure to apply aseptic technic Just as though for an operation, the chance of injur ing a nerve by injecting the medicine into it, and the remote chance of injecting the medicine directly into the blood in a vein, which would make no serloui difference provided the injec tion is made slowly as it should be in every instance. On the other hand, I quote from a personal communication from a physician who does not entirely agree with my teach ings about "shots". He writes; Dear Doctor: ' The writer wishes you would try giving vitamin Bl and some other vitamins hypo dermlcally. You will be as tonished at the prompt re sponse and the satisfied pa tient. Of course one does not have to charge more than $2 for an office hypol ' Cordially, . , M. D. Needle points should be 'carefully inspected and al ways kept razor-sharp . . . the flashlike Job, quick, painless, then give the injection slowly . ; . Patients who say the injec tion does not hurt are more likely to stay with the doctor and send others. Hypodermic medication should be painless. The physician using this method gets better results, sees his pa tient as frequently as may be necessary and gets better co operation. That last observation Is signifi cant. If the doctor sees the pa tient frequently and the patient co-operates better, the treatment is more likely to prove satisfac tory, whether it consists of hypo dermic injections or encouraging pats on the proximal protuber ance. There is a good deal of wis dom and professional sagacity in the good doctor's observations about this method of administra tion, although -if I were the pa tient I'd prefer to take vitamin B-complex by mouth and I'd ex pect better from any amount of vitamin B-l alone administered by injection. But then, I don't believe there Is anything mys terious about "shots." Do you?
