According to the law of averages we must expect more and more losses from our own Jackson county ooys on tne Dattieiront. Thus, the critical shortage of army nurses and' medical and surgical technicians really hits home. It's a prettv serious matter and something must be done at once to remedy the deplorable situation in army hospitals, here and THE surgeon general of the European theatre tells us that 11 general U. S. army hospitals have re cently arrived in that war zone without a single nurse. At this moment every army nurse here at home must handle 26 hospital beds almost twice as many beds as any one person is efficiently able to handle. And 30,000 wounded men' overseas to army general each month. THE only solution is for more and more army nurses to volunteer at once and their professional ef ficiency stretched to the limit with new WAC medi cal technicians. These WACs, after intensive instruc tion, can aid doctors and nurses in the general care of wounded can administer blood transfusions, serve as ward masters, deliver meals of injured men and feed those who are helpless, and keep essential records which are important to their present progress and future protection. PIGHT thousand of these WACs are needed at once, and Jackson county's quota is only three. Who will step forth to answer this patriotic and humani tarian call? We prefer to accept the latter and point out these facts: Ninety per cent of our former tin suddIv came from the Malay States, captured by the Japs early in the war. They still hold this principal source and we simply cannot set aside the drive at the Japanese nomesiana to re-conquer the Netherlands East Indies. Reclaimed tin from cans must therefore meet urgent wartime needs. Loop, Pratt, Kans. was convicted by an army court martial today of charges of neg lect of duty, conspiracy to de fraud the government and wrongly disposing of one box of rations and one carton of ciga rettes. The trial was the outgrowth of the mass prosecution of more than 180 American soldiers on charges of stealing U. S. army supplies and selling them in the French black market. Mai. Walter H.
