r LOCAL and Recovers Mrs. A. C. Lucas has returned to her home at 411 South Oakdale avenue after re covering from an operation at a local hospital. Unit To Meet Evans Valley Extension unit will meet at the home ot Jewel Wright, February 1. This will be a social meeting and those attending are asked to bring a covered dish tor lunch and sewing. Footprint to Meet The Footprinters chapter will meet at Kyle's restaurant in Central Point, Wednesday, January 31, the secretary, Robert M. Elder, said today. Secretary Elder said notices mailed to members (or the regular meeting had given the date as December 31 instead of January 31. Medfordites Home Pvt. Mar shall O. Bessonette, Jr., with his wife, the former Kathleen Ed wards, also of Medford, and their five-months-old daughter are visiting for a few days at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall O. Bessonette, Sr., Old Pacific highway. Pvt. Bes srnette entered the service about seven months ago from Medford and Is assigned to an anti-aircraft unit at Fort Bliss, Texas His wife and child have been making their home in Etna, Calif. New Manager Robert L. Beebe, who has been with Mont gomery Ward and Company for approximately three and a half years, has been named assistant manager of Ward's Medford store. He arrived here January 8 from Portland where he was a department manager for more than two years for the mail or der division of the organization. Mrs. Beebe and their two young daughters are expected from Portland in a few weeks, when the family will establish resi dence in Medford. ' Assumes CAA Duties Vaughn Lockwood assumed his duties as Civil Aeronautics Ad ministration airport traffic con troller yesterday at Medford air port it was announced today. Lockwood came here from Port land where he held a similar po sition in CAA for over two years. He Joined CAA in Seattle, where he trained for two months before assignment to Portland. He graduated from the Univer sity of W a s h i n g ton In 1940. Lockwood, with his wife and two children has established resi dence here at 828 Pennsylvania street. Gets Permit A building permit was issued by the city superintendent yesterday to H. R. Walker, 409 Summit street for the purpose of building a private garage at an estimated cost of $130. Hera from India George F. Tucker, Lieutenant Junior grade in the U. S. Maritime service nas been visiting at his home, 17 Kenwood avenue, since last Thursday after returning from duty in India. He will leave tor active duty Friday. Home from Army Harold Wright has returned to his home in Sams Valley after an honor able discharge from the army at Fort Lewis, Wash., on January 23. Wright was stationed at'Fort Benning, Ga., with a field artil lery battalion before returning home. He had been in the arm ed services about two years. He Is the son of Mrs. Clara Wright of Sams Valley. Vet To Live Here Ralph C. Babb, formerly of Seattle, who is a discharged veteran from the navy has come to Medford to make his home. He is employed at the Western Oil and Burner company and plans to have his wife and children join him here in the near future. He saw ac tive service with the navy and was honorably discharged from the U. S. Naval hospital at Seat tle recently. CHUTE SAVES PILOT Santa Rosa, Cel., Jan. 30 U.R) Second Lt. Robert C. Black of Drew, Miss., parachuted to safety yesterday after his twin engined fighter plane crashed about ten miles northeast of Cloverdale, Cel., authorities an nounced today. MAGNATE DIES Claremont, Calif., Jan. 30 (U.R) Robert R. Clark, 83, for mer president of Quaker Oats Co., St. Joseph, Mo., and of Davis Milling Co., which later became the Aunt Jemima Mills Co., died yesterday after a short Illness. For the last 10 days mail for Pvt. McMahan has been coming to Box 489, Medford post office. The box is held by C. D. Col- baugh, 141 S. Holly and Mr. Colbaugh never heard of Pvt. McMahan in his life. The mystery of the missing private deeped today when the local draft board reported it had received notice of Pvt. McMa han's honorable discharge Jan. 13, 194S, from the army, sent from Dibble General Hospital, Auburn, Calif., giving the same address Box 489, Medford. It was the first time they had heard of him, too. The notice shows McMahan en listed in the army at Fort Lo gan, Colo., prior to September, 1940, when selective service came Into existence. Has anybody here seen Eddie? CALLS FOR TEST Ottawa, Jan. 80 (U.R) Ca nadian Prime Minister W. L. Mackenzie King accepted the challenge of minority party op position today and called the first general election since 1941 as a popular test of his wartime leadership. King's decision came last night after he had determined that his minister of national defense, Gen. A. G. L. McNaughton, faced a battle to win a seat in com mons which would assure his presence in parliament in the event another session is called before a general election. Revercomb, R., W. Va. Other new bills in the senate were introduced by: Sens. James E. Murray, D., Mont., Carl A. Hayden, D., Ariz., and James G. Schrugham, D., Nev. to provide that mine oper ators will not b'e required to operate property to hold it leg ally if they are unable to do so because of shortages of labor, power, equipment or because of government regulation. E FIGHT TO EPOST New York, Jan. 80 (U.B Henry Wallace opened his cam paign today, for popular support of his bid for the post of Secre tary of Commerce and its present lending-spending powers with an appeal to the liberal forces that sw t President Roosevelt into office for a fourth term. Wallace Issued his first call against a sympathetic sounding board last night a testimonial dinner given him by the union for democratic action, an organi zation of American Federation of Labor and Congress ot Industrial organizations, labor leaders and a handful of industrialists head ed by Bruce Blleven, liberal writer. - In a bombastic speech Wallace said his opponents were men "fighting against the survival of capitalism and free enterprise." He told the .1,450 guests at the dinner these men either, support "policies which will make 80, 000,000 jobs impossible, or wish to destroy all possibility of a progressive democratic party as a national force." Heartened by a praiseful let ter written by President Roose velt to sponsors of the testimon ial dinner five days before Wal lace's nomination as secretary of commerce was sent to the senate, the former vice president inter polated his prepared speech to say he would decline tne jod u its spending powers were assign ed to a "too-little and too-late man." Pfc. Melzer Wins Silver Star Award, Pfc. John E Melzer, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Melzer of 17 Corning Court, was awarded the silver star medal recently for gallantry in action, according to information received by his par ents. With a tank destroyer unit In France, Pfc. Melzer was award ed the silver star after a tank- battle during which, according to the citation he refused to turn back although his tank had suffered three direct hits and was badly damaged.
