FIGHT TO
EPOST
New York, Jan. 80 (U.B
Henry Wallace opened his cam
paign today, for popular support
of his bid for the post of Secre
tary of Commerce and its present
lending-spending powers with an
appeal to the liberal forces that
sw t President Roosevelt into
office for a fourth term.
Wallace Issued his first call
against a sympathetic sounding
board last night a testimonial
dinner given him by the union
for democratic action, an organi
zation of American Federation of
Labor and Congress ot Industrial
organizations, labor leaders and
a handful of industrialists head
ed by Bruce Blleven, liberal
writer.
- In a bombastic speech Wallace
said his opponents were men
"fighting against the survival of
capitalism and free enterprise."
He told the .1,450 guests at the
dinner these men either, support
"policies which will make 80,
000,000 jobs impossible, or wish
to destroy all possibility of a
progressive democratic party as
a national force."
Heartened by a praiseful let
ter written by President Roose
velt to sponsors of the testimon
ial dinner five days before Wal
lace's nomination as secretary of
commerce was sent to the senate,
the former vice president inter
polated his prepared speech to
say he would decline tne jod u

his wife after attending his fa
