i EIGHT MESrORD MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday. Jan. 1, 1945 Your Health and Its Care BY DR. WILLIAM BRADY M D. Readers should addrtts tnqulric-t toi Of. William Brady 26s El Camtno. BtTerly Hills Call. TREATMENT OF ENLARGED TON8IL8 A parents, teachers and nurses must be reminded again and again, it is not abnormal am for children ten or twelve years of age to have en larged (hyper trophled) ton sils. In most e h i Idren w h o se tonsils are enlarged there is also some enlarge ment of the Dr. Brady third or phar yngeal tonsil in the roof of the throat cavity or pharynx out of direct sight behind the soft pal ate, such enlargement being commonly known aa "adenoids or "adenoid growth" or "adenoid vegetation'. Tonsil tissue is composed of small round cells akin to the lymphocytes .or small white blood corpuscles, en meshed in aott fibres of connec tive tissue euch tissue Is called lymphoid ' or adenoid tissue, whether It composes the tonsils, the adenoid body,, the lymph nodes or ''kernels" In various parts of the body, the ring of guardian tissue around the ori fice of the appendix, the spleen, or the bone marrow. Adenoid tissue in tonsils or elsewhere serves to protect against infection and contributes not only lymphocytes and phago cytes which fight against invad ing germs 'but also red cor puscles to the blood. Remember, though, the visible tonsils and the pharyngeal tonsil (adenoid) together make only a minor frac tion of the lymphoid or adenoid tissue in the body, and so the loss of tonsils and adenoids scarcely affects natural' immun ity or natural capacity to fight Infection. . , . . Mere enlargement or hyper trophy of tonsils andor adenoids in children, then, ordinarily, calls for no medical or surgical treat ment. In preceding talks we have urged better .hygiene 'for all children,, particularly more exposure to sunshine or , sky shine or just daylight the year around. This is available to children, in all seasons and cli mates, provided their parents, a- i. ii nsin, J.... Herbalist teachers, superior-feeling neigh bors and old fogyfamlly nhyal- clans are not obsessed with the catching cold delusion, The less opportunity the child has for exposure (of naked skin) the greater is the child's need for a daily ration of vitamin the sunshine vitamin. If the c lid , does not mind the fishy taste and the parents do not mind the extra expense, a spoon ful or two of fish liver oil a day will supply the vitamin D need ed, if this is taken the year around. An easier, pleasanter way for any child or any adult to get needed vitamin D Is by eating along with breakfast ev ery day a few tablets containing vitamin D with vitamin B-com- olex. When a child with enlarged tonsils andVor adenoids obvious ly suffers from obstruction of breathing (breathes tnrougn mouth when asleep); or from swollen and sometimes tender or sore "kernels" (lymph nodes) or "alands" down the side or sides of the neck; or from too frequent acute sore throat or acute cor- yza, then tonsillotomy clipping of tonsil, not tonsillectomy or an attempt to remove all of the ton silis advisable, in my opinion.
