CAPTAIN SLEETER IS The Piclflc war may not last as long as ths European conflict because of the excellent leader hip of our military and naval forces, the "know how" of American fighting men and the tendency of Japanese to continue established strategy now well known by our forces. This was the optimistic prediction . of Capt. Robert Sleeter, who has lust returned from the South Pacific and is visiting this week with family and friends in Med , lord. Capt Sleeter addressed the Medford Rotary club Tuesday tt the Hotel Medford, giving highlights of the earlier cam eaigns in the Pacific. The Med' ford officer was attached to the 41st division, which saw pro longed fighting in the critical days of the Japanese war. He was Introduced by Dr. B. L. Lageson. "People here do not really know what 'all out' war is,1 Capt. Sleeter told Rotarians in telling ot the wartime rationing hardships in Australia. The stoic ism of the Australian people In the face of great sacrifices was lauded. The fighting "Aussies' were also cited for their gallant ry. 1 i Capt. Wac re cruiting officer for the Medford area, has Just returned from a three-day conference in Portland where, she said, one of the main topics up for discussion was the proposed new service act that will draft both men and women. Lt Ingraham also said that the grave and acute situation on the western front caused the war department to issue a na tionwide appeal for more wom en to Join the Wac and an nounces continuation of recruit ing for 1945 with emphasis on obtaining trainees for hospital Jobs. She pointed out that acute manpower shortages, increased Job quotas and high casualty fig ures were responsible for re sumed emphasis on Wac recruit ing. "The shortage of hospital tech' nlclans has assumed a situation of such gravity," Col. Harry Lawton, in charge of recruiting for 9th service command, re ported, "that special emphasis should be given to recruiting for army medical department and qualified women will be given thorough but speedy condensed specialized training before being assigned to army hospitals, where they will participate in the army cast program for the rehabilitation of our battle wounded men." Prayers For Local Servicemen To Be Held On Thursday A prayer and worship service on behalf of Medford men and women in the armed service will be conducted in Fellowship hall at the First Christian church, at 7:30 p. m. Thursday, the Rev. Delbert W. Daniels, pastor, an nounced today. A feature of the evening, he said, will be a vocal solo, "The Lord's Prayer," by Joanna Wyatt. The pastor extended a special invitation to relatives and friends of service men and wo men to Join members of the con gregation in the meeting. Treasury department, shows that Jackson County ex ceded its quota In total sales and In sales of all series. Total sales were $3,268,100, 143 per cent of the quota and placed tills county 29th among counties of the atate. Series 'TE" sales totaled $784, 600, 130.8 per cent of the quota and placed the county 18th in rank in the state. Sales to indi viduals, Including "E" bonds, amounted to $1,387,500, which was 125 per cent of the quota, and sales to corporations to taled $1,880,600, 'or 160.7 per cent of the quota. The county ranked 27th in the state for both these divisions. A comparative report shows that total sales for the Sixth War Loan were trifle higher than for the fifth loan, when the figure was $3,238,000, and con siderably higher than for the Fourth War Loan, when sale of all issues totaled $2,722,100. Fifth loan "E" sales totaled $758,000 and "E" sales In the Fourth loan were $997,800. E PHYSICIAN FOR The Medford City Council held Its second regular meeting of the new year last night ap pointing Dr. LeRoy C. Jensen as physician on the city boxing commission after accepting the resignation of Dr. A. F. w. Kresse. The bid of the Gilmore Oil company for purchase of city gasoline during the year was ac cepted by the group. A motion was passed recommending Issu ance of a beer license to the Dixie Cafe. Lester Welsenberger was elected to paint the city hall and fire hall, J. R. Woodford, city recorder reported. An ordnance was passed to vacate 'the alley in block- 60, original town, near the Junior High school. The annual report of the Med ford fire department was re ceived from Roy Elliott, fire chief.
