LUZON CITIES LEFT BY ATTACK FURY With U. S. Invasion Forces on Luzon, Jan- i3 (U.R) Dagupan, a peacetime city of 35,000, lies in fire-blackened ruins today desolate and deserted. It will cost millions of dollars to rebuild this once-thriving commercial center and the other devastated cities and towns along Lingayen gulf. But hundreds of American lives doubtless have been saved and that was the key to the Luzon assault. After viewing at first hand the devastation wrought by our pre-Invasion naval shelling and . aerial bombing, particularly in the cities of Dagupan and San Fabian, the lack of enemy op position to our initial landings is understood. Even before the first troops hit the beaches, at least half of all suspected military objectives in these two major gulf cities had been pulverized by the com bined fire of battleships, cruisers and destroyers and the big bombs of our carrier-based air craft. This tour produced convincing evidence that our landings on central Luzon came as a com plete surprise to the befuddled Japanese who had expected an invasion since last December but believed we would land either to the north or south, The Japs obviously were caught off balance, but stiffen ing enemy resistance now may be expected along a defense line 20 to 30 miles inland behind the strategic Agno river. GI'S PET WHISTLES Cave-In-Rock, 111. (U.R) Pvt.
