LOCAL and Returns From Portland Mrs. W. E. Lantis has returned to her home at 723 Palm after a visit with members of her family in Portland during the holidays. Dane 'Announced Pocahon tas lodge is sponsoring a dance at Redmen hall, Fourth and Ap ple streets, Monday night at 0:30 o'clock for members and their Invited friends. Law .Safe Warren Law, for mer Medford resident, in the navy for the past four years, recently escaped unharmed when his ship sank according to word-received here by friends. Law is the son of Mrs. O. J. Law, now of Alsea, Ore. The family left here several years go. HEAVY SNOW IN HILLS IS HOPE OF IRRIGATORS It was raining this morning at Fish Lake, according to a telephone report to the office oi the Medford irrigation district, with four inches of old snow on the ground. At Four Mile Lake, the other source of water supply for the district, there was 26 inches of snow on the ground, according to the last report. Ir rigationists of the valley are now hoping for a heavy fall of snow In the hills. Heavy snow is reported on the ground at Crater Lake and Union Creek but with no recent new snow. FIRE IN CRIB TO KEEP INFANT WARM IS FATAL Canandaigua, N. Y., Jan. 12 (U.PJ Efforts of David Coye, 3, to make his 13-months-old broth er, John, more comfortable dur ing a cold wave were revealed today to have caused the infant's death. David told his mother, Mrs. David C. Coye, that he "put a fire" in John's crib because "baby was cold." He lighted a stick of firewood in the kitchen stove and placed It In the crib, he said. Core The Jackson County Civic Music Association last night gave the first , concert of the 1949 series at the high school auditorium presenting Joseph Szigeti, world renowned Hun garian violinist, assisted by Harry Kaufman at the piano. The audience was the largest ever assembled here for a civic concert and completely filled the hall. The enthusiasm was unbounded and music lovers were sure they heard one of the great masters of supreme art Choosing as his opening num ber the Brahm's Sonato, No 3 in D-minor for violin and piano, the artist introduced this mon umental work, written In four movements, to our community. The people loved it. The music is stupendous in construction and of unparalled emotional depth and beauty. The . intel lectuality demanded the refine ment and finish of the artist's rendition and the satisfaction of his interpretation were appar ent in every phrase of the ex quisite music. In the second group of con trasting numbers, the marvelous beauty and unity of Mr. Szigeti's intonation, his sensitivity to nu ance and phrasing, and the well- nigh infinite resources of the NO D10UT HERE IN COAL CRISIS s: Washington, Jan. 12XU.R) Shop windows and billboards in many parts of the country will be darkened next week by gov ernment order and millions of homes and office buildings are expected to lower heating tem peratures in cooperation with a White House move to avert a threatened coal crisis. Warning that a serious coal shortage is impending, War Mo bilization Director James F. Byrnes last night announced a drastic conservation program which he said was the only al ternative to coal rationing. Seth M. Bullls of the California-Oregon Power company stated today that there was lit tle likelihood of the order being enforced here since the electric ity used locally is not produced from coal. P.-T. A. Activities Eagle Point P.-T.A. Plans were made for mothers to assist the Eagle Point school cook with the hot lunch program at the meeting of the Eagle Point Parent-Teacher association held January 10 at the school house. It is hoped that all moth ers will aid with the project. A dish towel and silverware shower was Included in the eve ning's events and the association extends thanks to those who contributed. The E-mlnor concerto by Men delssohn, more often heard than the Brahms sonatas and hence more familiar to audiences, was played in it entirety. The first movement is an ecstasy of Joy in Mr. Szigeti's hands, the love ly andante, followed by the mounting speed, and intensity of the turbulent finale, brought hearty and Instantaneous ap plause. The orchestra score us arranged for piano was effec tively played by Mr. Kaufman who shared honors with the vio linist in this as well as in the Brahms sonata. While he ac companying was completely sat isfying he also showed in his solo work what artistic and ma ture piano can be. The Russian numbers follow ing the intermission were de lightful with characteristic and nationalistic charm and verve. They were much enjoyed and elicited much applause. The encores were: ""Glaoom's Dance", Dvorak-Krelsler; "Zeph- er," Jena Hubay; "Variations On a theme of Corelli" by Tar- trnl-Krelsler. The artists 'go from here to Eugene where they play Sunday on the University of Oregon concert series. Dell Crowl Sends Box Of Souvenirs From German Base A package of interesting souvenirs and presents has been received in Medford by Mr. and Mrs. L. Crowl, 625 South Cen tral avenue, from their son, T. Sgt. Dell Crowl, stationed some where in Germany. In the package were a Jewel case made of shells, a handker chief case made from colored reeds braided in squares, and what the sergeant termed a "rum barrel." The china barrel has six little mugs and with it a figurine of a drunken man with a tall hat, the hat holding the bung for the barrel. The package also held a pair of china love-birds. Sgt. Crowl has been overseas for two years, being stationed first in Africa, then subsequent ly in Sicily, Italy and England- He participated in the D-Day Normandy invasion.
