World Renozvned Violinist
Opens Concert Series Here
. By Mrs. E. E. Core
The Jackson County Civic
Music Association last night
gave the first , concert of the
1949 series at the high school
auditorium presenting Joseph
Szigeti, world renowned Hun
garian violinist, assisted by
Harry Kaufman at the piano.
The audience was the largest
ever assembled here for a civic
concert and completely filled
the hall. The enthusiasm was
unbounded and music lovers
were sure they heard one of the
great masters of supreme art
Choosing as his opening num
ber the Brahm's Sonato, No 3
in D-minor for violin and piano,
the artist introduced this mon
umental work, written In four
movements, to our community.
The people loved it. The music
is stupendous in construction
and of unparalled emotional
depth and beauty. The . intel
lectuality demanded the refine
ment and finish of the artist's
rendition and the satisfaction of
his interpretation were appar
ent in every phrase of the ex
quisite music.
In the second group of con
trasting numbers, the marvelous
beauty and unity of Mr. Szigeti's
intonation, his sensitivity to nu

ent in every sweep of the bow.
The E-mlnor concerto by Men
delssohn, more often heard than
the Brahms sonatas and hence
more familiar to audiences, was
played in it entirety. The first
movement is an ecstasy of Joy
in Mr. Szigeti's hands, the love
ly andante, followed by the
mounting speed, and intensity
of the turbulent finale, brought
hearty and Instantaneous ap
plause. The orchestra score us
arranged for piano was effec
tively played by Mr. Kaufman
who shared honors with the vio
linist in this as well as in the
Brahms sonata. While he ac
companying was completely sat
isfying he also showed in his
solo work what artistic and ma
ture piano can be.
The Russian numbers follow
ing the intermission were de
lightful with characteristic and
nationalistic charm and verve.
They were much enjoyed and
elicited much applause.
The encores were: ""Glaoom's
Dance", Dvorak-Krelsler; "Zeph-
er," Jena Hubay; "Variations
On a theme of Corelli" by Tar-
trnl-Krelsler.
The artists 'go from here to
Eugene where they play Sunday
on the University of Oregon
concert series.
