Wilson, director. To Funeral Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Arnold, of 340 Haven street, are leaving today for Roseburg where Martin L. Paul, father of Mrs. Arnold and long time resident of the Douglas county metropolis passed- away Tuesday. Funeral services for Mr. Paul will be held in Rose burg Friday. Fined Bill Ballew was fined $2.50 in local court Monday for driving without an operator's license. David R. Watson, ap pearing for the same offense in court today paid a fine of $2.50. Parking in a private driveway caused Ed Nunn to be fined $2.50 in court Tuesday, accord ing to records on file. . It Cadet Nurse A dispatch from Bushnell General hospital, Brigham City, Utah, states that Dorothy Nelson,' a daughter of Mrs. Joan Staley, 21 Hawthorne street, Medford, has enrolled in the army cadet nurse school at Bushnell for training. She is at present a senior nursing student at Dee hospital, Ogden, Utan. Son Born, Father Here Pvt. and Mrs. James F. Harris have announced the arrival of a son, Donald LeRoy, born December 25 at station hospital, Camp" White. Mrs. Harris Is the former Faye Daughterty and lives at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Daugherty on Ross Lane. Pvt. Harris arrived . in Medford Saturday for a 12 day furlough with his family, the first since his entry Into the army six months ago. Sandy, chief of veterans personnel from state selective service headquar ters at Salem cam to Medford yesterday for conferences with the Veterans Advisory commit tee and other local agencies di rectly concerned with rehabili tation or reemployment of re turned veterans on farms. This was the first In a series of conferences scheduled by Col. Sandy throughout Oregon. A similar meeting took place In Grants Pass today. The Veterans Advisory com mittee, of which Henry Conger is chairman, la organized for the purpose of assisting discharged veterans on farm problems in Jackson county, and advising them what can be done with farms acquired under the G.I. bllKof rights. Robert G. Demmer residence, 609 West Jackson yesterday after noon where a flue fire had start ed. Chemical equipment extin guished the blaze which caused no damage, according to report, a Oa CAA Staff Km An nouncement was made today of the appointment of Betty V. Coy to the staff of the civil aero nautics administration here as an aircraft communicator. Miss Coy is from Seattle, where she re cently completed a six weeks' training period for the position, She went on duty at Medford airport Monday and is living temporarily at the Holland hotel. Traffic Accident A. P. Trav ers, a police officer, was on his way home this morning when the pickup truck he was driving was struck by a vehicle driven by Lowell B.-Larson of route 4, 15-year-old student holding driving permit from South Da kota. The accident occurred on West 6th near North Oakdale, according to a traffic report wmcrt estimated damage to Trov ers' car at approximately $100, No Injuries were suffered by either party the report stated, Educators Oppose Military Training Washington, Jan. 10 U.R) The American Council of Educa tlon today urged congress not to pass a peacetime military con scription law "under , wartime emotional pressure." The organization called for establishment of a commission of leading persons from labor, Industry, agriculture, education and the church to study the mat ter and report to the nation. Postal Service Making Profit, Budget Reveals Washington, Jan. 10 (U.FS The postoffice department Is getting to be a money-making business. President Roosevelt's fiscal 1946 budget, submitted to con gress today, figured that during the fiscal year 1946 the "rain nor sleet nor wind nor hail" de partment would accumulate a surplus of $269,214,280. It's fig ured to make $117,643,897 pro fit during the current year, while it made $37,768,028 dur ing the year ended June 30, 1944 (fiscal "944).
