I LOCAL and Sergeant Here Sgt. Alfred M. Beck, from Yuma, Ariz., army air field, spent the past week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Beck, Old Stage Road. Ball Posted Ernest H. White, 43, was booked on a charge of drunknessness Thursday but was later released after posting $10 bail, according to a report on file at the police station. In Jail Joseph W. Williams. B8, Is being held In the city jail on a drunkenness charge, ac cording to a report on file. He was picked up late Thursday eight on South Central and Ninth streets. To School Paul W. Hughes, 717 East Jackson street will en ter Oregon State College at Cor vallis January 2nd. Mr. Hughes was honorably discharged from the armed forces sometime ago. He plans to study geology at the college.- , Eagles Party The annual New Year's party for the Eagles and auxiliary will be held New Year's Eve, beginning at 8:30. G. T. Dynge, general chairman, Is In charge of the program, Houseguests of Eagles are in vited. From Mystery House Mr, and Mrs. John Litster, owners of the "Mystery House" on Sar dine Creek, were Medford busi ness visitors Wednesday. Mr. Litster reports many continue to visit the "Mystery House" de spite the advent of winter. Minger Here Alton L. Win ger of the merchant marine ser vice has been in Medford for a short visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Minger of 2117 Capital avenue, leaving Christ mas night. Minger, returned from 11 months' service on ships carrying supplies to the various war fronts, has gone to Phila delphia, Mo., to visit his wife and small son. Bliss, 313 South Grape street, met with a slight automobile acci dent Thursday afternoon when his car collided on South Grape street with one operated by Bessie Geary, aged 14. of Trail Damage was minor the report on file stated. Commissioned Gene C. Rae received his wings this week after graduation ceremonies at Moore Field, Tex., according to a news dispatch from the field. and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the AAF. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert A Rae, 819 Bennett street. To Practice New officers of the United Spanish War Veter ans' auxiliary are aski to meet Sunday at 2:30 p. m. at the armory for practice for installa tion ceremonies. Officers of both the veterans and auxiliary will be installed Wednesday evening of next week at the armory. e e Washington Visitors Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Banks from Grand Coulee, Wash., have been enjoy ing a brief visit with Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Rogers at 315 South Orange St. Mr. Banks Is chief engineer of the Grand Coulee dam and director of the Bureau of Reclamation, western division. Home on Leave -Arland Thor- nell. S Vc (S.M.), son of Mrs. Doyle Carte, Route 4, is visiting ai the home of his mother on a 20-day leave after a year's ser vice in the South Pacific and India theaters. He will report to San Francisco, where he is pres ently stationed on conclusion of bis visit. Greetings From India A Christmas greeting to his valley friends was extended by Lit. Col, A. J. Hemstreet, Jr., from India i by way of a V-mail letter to the Mail Tribune, received yester day. Col Hemstreet, who resided in Medford for a few years while on duty with the Civilian Con servation corps, later transferred to the air corps and is now witn the China - Burma - India com mand. The colonel wrote "I wish I were back in Medford again right now." To Leave Staff Sgt. Charles W. Lovell will leave tomorrow for Santa Barbara, Calif., where he will report to an infantry re assignment center. Sgt. Loveu recently returned to this country after serving 32 months in the South Pacific with the 41st In fantry Division. He will be ac- comoanied south by his sister. Miss Virginia Lovell, who is re turning to Kansas City where she is attending school. The two young people spent the holidays with their parents, Mr. ana Mrs. E. M. Lovell, 526 Edwards street. BOTH Merricks and Dreamland DancesI Spats Improved Maurice' Spatz, confined in a Medford hospital since Christmas day, is reported improved and is ex pected to leave the hospital to day, or tomorrow for his home at 922 South Oakdale avenue. Car Accident Paul Stelle of Medford was Involved in a minor traffic accident late Thursday evening when the Ford dump truck he was driving collided with a passenger car at Ninth and Central streets. Rob ert J. Glover of Klamath Falls was operating the other vehicle Only minor damage occurred and neither driver was injured, according to a report on file here. , E.P. TAKEN BY DEATH Everett Forest Alexander passed away at a local hospital Thursday. Mr. Alexander was born in Illinois on October 4 1872. He spent his early life in Kentucky where he learned the grocery business. Mr. Alexander was united in marriage to Miss Grace Wagy at Sciota, 111., on February 24, 1897. In 1926 he moved to Medford and established Alexander's Grocery store in the Liberty building. Fifteen years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and had to retire. He is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church, and leaves a host of friends to mourn his passing. Survivors, besides his wife, include one son, Sgt. Alonzo E. Alexander, with the army in the south Pacific; two daughters, Mrs. Esther Green, Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. Robert L, Powell, Newell, Calif.; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs, Ed Hayes, Illinois; Mrs. Fred H Blume, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Mrs, Edna Haydter, Estacada, Ore two brothers, Dr. J. H. Alexan der, Portland, Ore., and George W. Alexander, Blandinsville, 111. . Funeral services will be con ducted from Sacred Heart Catho lic church Saturday at 9 p. m., the Rev. Father Henry Orth of ficiating. Interment will take place in Siskiyou Memorial park Recitation of the Rosary will be held at Perl Funeral Home this evening at 8 o'clock. . Downed Airmen to Distill Water by New 'Solar Still Los Angeles, Dec. 29 U.B Airmen downed at sea will turn sea water Into drinking water with their own "solar still" soon to be put into mass production, the air force technical service command reported today. The still is a flat, 30-inch en velope packed into life rafts, six stills to every plane borne emergency raft. Inside the envelope is a plastic screen, covered by black cel lulose sponge. The downed airman Inflates the envelope until it forms tube 12 inches in diameter, puts two quarts of seawater In it and ties it to the side of the raft. Sun rays evaporate the sea wat er the- salt remains on the sponge and the vapor then con denses as drinking water in a small reservoir. Each still will produce a pint oi water a day. Funeral Rites for World War Invalid Today at Ashland Ashland, Dec. 29 Funeral services are being held today for Lloyd Orville Peterson, World War I veteran who passed away at his home, 153 Granite street, December 25. Peterson enlisted In May, 1918, and was a private in 41st Co., 11th Rec. Battalion, 162 D. B., and was discharged with 125th Casualty Co., February ZD, 1919. He was wounded in line of duty and never fully re covered, being an invalid for the remaining years of his life. Included among the survivors is a sister, Mrs. Charles Reeder, Mecuora. U. P. Paul Tomlin, the woman s husband, arrived in Roseburg and conferred with State Police Sgt. Paul Morgan. Tomlin said his wife operated a travel serv ice and had driven five air cadets from Texas to their homes in Oregon and Idaho. She start ed home from Portland and wired her mother from Wald port on November 22. Morgan said it is feared she may have picked up a hitch hiker who stole her automobile.
