The hotel, floated In mud to cushion it from underground shock, should withstand the con cussion of the nearest miss from ever increasing American bomb ing raids. Wrciht said. A direct hit from a B-29 bomb would be another story. . The rest of the city, although it has probably the best fire pro tection system in the world, is vulnerable to bombs incen diary and high explosive, the 75-year-old architect said, but to do any appreciable damage through its buildings, mainly one-story, "the cost will be ter riffic." And the advantage, in Wright's opinion, is question able. Tokyo's business district com pares with that of any modern city, Wright said; its parliament buildings are of heavy German masonry. "Japan's factories pre sent the same problem for Amer ican bombers as do those of Ger many, from which they were copies." The emperor lives un der a heavy roof in a highly in flammable palace. But the largest area of Tokyo is residential, with one-story buildings roofed with tile over a foot or more of heavy mud. Falling roofs may cause casual ties, Wright ponlted out, but but their construction also serves to smother any fire which may be started in the flimsy build ings. 'Japan is the great stoic na tion of the world," Wright said, 'and it is all built for disaster Tokyo has been destroyed five times since it became the capi tal, and the Japanese can see it all destroyed again as a matter of course." STUTTGART RAIL YARDS OFNAZIS unn London, Dec. 16 (U.R) More than 100 U. S. 8th air force Fly ing Fortresses, escorted by 100 Mustang fighters, hammered rail road yards north bf Stuttgart, 65 miles east of the U. S. 7th army front on the Rhine, today In a continuation of a campaign to knock out German communica tion lines to the western front. The assault, made in weather so bad that only one formation was able to bomb visually, was directed against yards in the suburb of Kornwestheim, five miles north of Stuttgart, where lines branch off the "Karlsruhe corner" of Germany. Big RAF Lancaster bombers, escorted by fighters, joined the daylight offensive, striking the industrial and rail center of Slegen, 45 miles east of Cologne, east of the U. S. First and Ninth army fronts. (The British radio, heard by CBS, reported that the intensive allied air assault on German's railroads "had been followed by a German radio announcement that It is impossible to relax the already drastic travel restrictions this Christmas." ROMMEL'S KIN HELPS Portland, Ore, Dec. 16--U.F9 Currence and silver coins total ing $1000 were donated, to the Multnomah Chapter of the Amer ican Red Cross by a 'Dutch motorship skipped who shared the same great-grandfather with the Into Marshal Erwin Rommel, nazl desert fox. At To Soldier Volet To the editor: As an ex-serviceman I would like .to know what happened to our so called soldiers vote. Didn't they have enough gas for the planes to car ry them back- to the states or were they saving that allotment of gas.' for the President and Eleanor son's wedding and hon eymoon trip to the Grand Can yon and Washington? Listen to the Bird To the editor: Army and navy hospitals, as the war progresses. must fill. Dare the writer offer a suggestion that may brighten the lives of both those soon to be convalescent and those who must be more patient? It grows out of his studies at Copenhagen, of the Danes teaching wild-bird music to blind children. This technique the writer, before World War I, reduced to pamph let form. It was distributed to institutions for the blind throughout the English-speaking world. The suggestion Is: That any one who feels prompted so to do subscribe for the nearest Vet eran's Hospital some good bird magazine or some nature maga zine with a bird department. The writer' has been doing this for some months for various Pacific coast hospitals with most satis factory responses. There is that about avian song, even when the bird cannot be seen, that appeals to all men. It Is something sooth ing, like the babbling brook or the music of those Aeolian harps, the wlnd-slnglng pine trees. C. M. Goethe 7th and J Streets, Sacramento, Cal.
