FOUR MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE oundsT. tw 17, 1944 Society 'Announce Troth Of Joan Stoehr To Californian Announcement of the engage ment and approaching marriage, of Miss Joan Stoehr was made last week at an evening party given by the bride-elect's sister Mrs. C. T. Steward, at her home on Eastwood Drive. Miss Stoehr's fiance is E. Cordell Eubanki of San Francisco and Oakland, Calif. The wedding has been set for December 27 and will be at St. .Mark's Episcopal church at 8 o'clock in the evening. Announcement of the engage ment was made by means of small scrolls in the semblance of candles which topped individ ual cakes. Miss Stoehr's engage ment ring was presented to her Jn a corsage of gardenias, sent by her fiance. 'I Bridge and music occupied .'the remainder of the evening. 'Twenty-eight of Miss Stoehr's 'friends were invited to the an nouncement party. Miss Stoehr, who made her rfiome here with Mr. and Mrs 'Steward for a number of years, Jhas been serving as a surgical i nurse at the Kaiser hospital in 'Oakland the past year. She re turned to Medford in Septenv ,ber. Mr. Eubanks, recently given ran honorable discharge from the 'navy, is now a civil service em ployee of the federal govern ment. Medford Firemen Hosts Friday Eve For Annual Party I Medford firemen and their families held the annual Christ mas dinner and Christmas tree party Friday night at the hall with 23 adults and 16 children present) . Dinner was served under the direction of Mrs. Earl Harrison and Mrs. Roy Elliott and LeRoy Williams acted as toastmaster. A prize was won by Mrs. Wei Coleman. Fire Chief Roy Elliott served as Santa Claus for the evening and presented each child with a gayly painted toy cart filled with Christmas sweets. The toy carts were made by men of the department for the children. A mm. Turney are holding open house this afternoon for parishioners and friends of St. Mark's Episco pal church. The affair is to be at the rectory, 203 North Oak dale avenue between the hours of 2 and 8 o'clock. This open house during the Christmas holi days Is a traditional affair given each year by the Turneys. Mrs. John Moffat, Mrs. V. J. Robinson and Mrs. A. G. McMil lin will preside at the refresh ment table during the open house. Mistletoe Club Holds Election; Party Planned Mrs. Michael Beck was elect ed president of the Mistletoe club when, the group met last week at the Girls' Community club. She succeeds Miss Blanche Arnold who has served the past year. Mrs. Carl Pearson was elected vice-president and Mrs. Herbert Bismark' was named secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Jessie Parker of Phoenix was introduced as a new mem ber of the club. Plans were made for a public card party which will be Wed nesday, Dec. 27, at the club house. Dessert-luncheon will be followed by cards. Mrs. Albert Braun has been named chair man in charge of the affair. It was announced that Mistle toe Camp, Royal Neighbors of America, would hold the annual Christmas party for members and frelr families Thursday night of this week at the K. of P. hall at 8 p. m. Members will exchange gifts and there will be a holiday treat for the children. Camp members are asked to bring cookies Lodge President Attends Meeting Ethel Lindholm, past state president of the Degree of Honor lodge, was a guest at the meet ing of the Medford Degree of Honor Juvenile club held De cember 8 at the Lincoln school gymnasium. During the meeting Collene Rose was Initiated and Carlene Mark was elected president for the coming year. Joan Kidwell was presented her corporal's stripes, Mildred Ann and Grace Allyn Gail sang two duets and Dixie Hammerley gave a piano number. Games were played, Bertha and Freddie Miller re ceived prizes. Plans were made for a Christ mas party and for Installation of officers at the January meet ing, the latter to be held Jan 13 at the Lincoln school. Lodge The annual homecoming and Christmas party of the Past Noble Grand club of Olive Re bekah lodge was held Thursday night at the Odd Fellow hall. Dinner was served at 8:30 and was followed by a Christmas program, including familiar car ols and a History of the first Christmas tree, the latter read by Ethyl Weed. There was an exchange of gifts and "Sister Olive" gifts were presented by the committee, Ethyl Weed and Rose Young. Iva Walden, president of the club was presented with a past president's pin. Installation of recently elected officers will be held the second Thursday In January. Committee for the meeting will be Myrtle Newton entertainment chairman, , and Veva wimer, refreshments. F. L. Club Plans Yuletide Affair Plans for the annual Christ mas party were made by F. L. club members when they were entertained Monday evening by Miss Georglana Hussong at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank Hussong, 56 North Barne- burg Road. The party will be held at the Girls' Community club on North Bartlett street Wednes day evening at 7:30 o'clock. Members of the club, their fam ilies and Invited guests are to spend an evening 'at cards fol lowed by an exchange of gifts. Refreshments will be served at the close of the evening. . 69c to $3.49 Vi Price Christmas Musk Program, To Be Given Wednesday night Medford public school students will pre sent a program of Christmas music at the high school audi torium at 8 p. m. The program will contain many of the favor ite carols as well as fine num bers less familiar according to Miss Mabel Nansen, supervisor of music for the public schools. Approximately 3S0 students will participate. The program will open with the 17th century processional hymn "O Come All Ye Faith ful' 'and will be followed by "The Shepherds" and "Sleep, Little Jesus" by a combined chorus of elementary school stu dents. A piano solo, "Christmas Eve" will be given by Phyllis Furry. "O Holy Night," Adam, and "Silent Night," Gruber, will be presented by the junior high school chorus and "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" Mendel ssohn, will be played by a brass choir. "Fairest Lord Jesus," tra ditional hymn, and "When the Sun Had Sunk to Rest," an old English carol, will be sung by the senior high school choir. - The high school girls' sextet will present a carol medley, ar ranged by Bourdon and "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," Calkin, will be sung by a mixed quartet of high school students. A vocal solo "Ave Maria" by Luzzi will be sung by June Wil liams. 'Jesus Is Born" Bohemian carol, and "Virgin's Slumber Song" by Reger will be given by the high school girls' chorus and a vocal duet, "Jesu Bam bino" by Pletro Yon, will be given by Loree Montieth and Ashland Woman Speaks Thursday At Union Meet Mrs. Mabel R. Lowther, Ash land, bl-county president of the W.C.T.U., was present for the roeeting of the Medford union held last Thursday at the home of Mrs. L. N. Younger and spoke on membership. Dr. Susie V. Standard presided and Mrs. Glenn Sanders presented devo- tionals. . During the afternoon a pro gram of Christmas music was presented - and Christmas gifts for the Children's Farm Home, Corvallts, were assembled. The union extends its thanks to those who aided with the gift project. Christmas carols were sung, with Mrs. Aletha Knutsen at the piano and Mrs. Arnold Kornstad sang. Next meeting of the union will be Jan. 11 at the home of Mrs. Nettie Groves, 232 South Grape street. ' Canton Auxiliary Electa Officers Mrs. Lottie Howard was elect ed president of the auxiliary to the Canton Siskiyou when ' the two groups met Friday night at the I.O.O.F. hall. Marie Hansen presided, over the business ses sion. Ella Gould was elected vice president,. Annie Bateman, sec retary and Lucretia Jordan, treasurer. Next meeting of the group will be the third Friday in Jan uary and a committee composed of Telltha Pickel, Ella Gould and Grace Hamlin will have charge of a supper. The Canton will hold election and Installation of officers at that time. Porters Entertain Niece and Husband Mr. and Mrs. George Porter, 826 Minnesota avenue, are en tertaining their niece and her husband. The program will close with "Glory to God" melody in canon style. v In addition to the all-school program, there will be Christ mas festivities at the various schools. - The Junior high school has planned a Christmas assembly for Friday at 11 a. m. and visi tors are welcome. At the Wash ington school a Christmas party is planned for Friday morning and carols will be sung around the Christmas tree. Lincoln school will present an operetta, "The Gift of Christ mas" by Myers and Carrington Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock The operetta will be presented by the intermediate grades and primary students will be heard in a group of carols. . At the Jackson school the in termediate grades will present the operetta, "There Was One Who Gave" by Annette Ham on Thursday and familiar carols will be sung by primary stu dents. Wednesday afternoon at 2 p. m. the pupils of Roosevelt school will present a Christmas pageant in two parts. Part one presents the nativity scene of the First Christmas, with music, and part two presents in costume "Christmas of Today" In the-various nations. Friday at 8 a. m. students will sing carols on the stairs for 30 minutes and at 10:30 each room will enjoy its own Christmas tree with exchange of gifts. Charter Members Honored Guests At Phoenix Tea Phoenix The Thursday club sliver tea, held recently to ob serve the 20th anniversary of the club's founding, was well at tended and pronounced a suc cess. Proceeds will go for main tenance of the library. Fall flowers and red berries decorated the ladies parlor of the Presbyterian church, where the tea was held. The tea table was attractively arranged with a centerpiece of chrysanthemums and yellow tapers. Mrs. Douglas Steadman and Mrs. Robert Fur ry presided at the table and were relieved during the after noon by other charter members of the club. Mrs. Floyd Barrett, the club president, presented gardenia corsages to several charter mem bers, Including the , Mesdames Colver Furry, Arthur Rose, Douglas Steadman, Earl Briscoe, George Bourne, Robert Furry and Raymond Fusry. During the afternoon Mrs. Charles Allen sang. Among out-of-town guests were the Mesdames Arthur . Rose, Colver Furry and Herbert Van Gordon of Medford, and Mrs. Harry Jackson of New York City who is in the west to visit her parents, Mr.' and Mrs. Alvin Coats and her sister, Mrs. Eldred Colver. - The club president has ex tended her thanks to the com mlttee members who worked to make the tea a success. Mayor and Mrs. Clarence A Meeker, 724 East Jackson bou levard, and daughter, Eleanor, Will leave Friday for Los Ange les to spend the holidays with friends. Lodges Announce " Christmas Party For Tuesday Eve , Among the largest of the Christmas parties planned to highlight the holiday season in Medford will be the annual par ty of the Eagles lodge and its auxiliary. The party is planned for Tuesday evening of this week and will be held at the lodge hall on West Main street at 7:30 p. m. Committee members state that program will open the eve ning's entertainment and will be followed by the Christmas treat for the youngsters. Thursday evening the auxil iary will hold a Christmas party following the regular business meeting and each member is to bring a gift for exchange'.' The group will meet at 8 p. m. Christmas Theme Marks Meeting Of Medford Club Christmas decorations of holly and red candles provided a holi day background for the meeting of the Medford Sojourners' club held Thursday afternoon at the Girls' Community club. Members will gather in tha fireplace room of the church at 2 o'clock. Miss Annette Gray will pre sent a reading and Christmas de votionals in story form, and will be led by Mrs. Callle Palm. Zontians Guests At Kurtz Studio" For Yule Party , Group singing of Christmas carols and Christmas games fea tured the holiday party of the Medford Zonta club held last week at the studio of Mrs. Effie Kurtz on North Ivy street. The festivities followed a brief busi ness meeting. Gifts of toys were exchanged and these were then collected and given to a crippled child. . Refreshments were served from tables centered with red and white candles with red ap ples as holders. Hostesses for the evening were the officers, Mrs. Irean Grigsby, Mrs. Florence Bolton, Miss Anne Bateman and Mrs. Grace Holmes. . 4 Pythian Sisters Christmas Party Held Wednesday Pythian Sisters and their hus bands held a Christmas dinner at the Girls' Community club Wednesday with S3 present.
