Dee. 18 U.B Fred (Dixie) Walker, the Idol of Flatbush, won the 1944 national league hatting championship by a margin of 10 percentage points over Stan Muslal of the St. Louis Cardinals, last year's winner, tne official averages revealed to night ' The veteran Brooklyn out fielder rapped out 191 hits in 83S times at bat for an average of .387 against .347 for the slug ging right fielder of the world champion Cardinals. Joe Mcdwick of the New York Giants finished third with .337, followed, by Johnny Hopp of the Cardinals with' .336 and Phil Cavarretta of the Chicago Cubs with .318. A total of 14 players hit .300 or better, with the St. Louis Cardinals winning the club bat ting title for, the third year in a row with an average of .273. Brooklyn was second with .269. followed by Pittsburgh with .265. A number of new records was established with Manager Mel Ott of the Giants leading the way with five. By scoring 91 runs, he brought his lifetime total to 1784, surpassing the old mark of 1740 held by Honus Wagner. His 46 long hits brought his extra base hit total to 1028, breaking another old Wagner mark of 1004. By hitting for 102 extra bases Ott extended his own league record to 2078, while his 26 home runs brought his total to 489, also a circuit mark. Ott extended to 48 his record of hit ting two or more homers in a game. Ott also tied two records. By playing his 19th season with New York, he tied the. mark of Charles (Gabby) Hartnett with the Chicago Cubs and by scoring six runs In the first game of a doubleheader on April 30 he equalled his own modern record. Slugging Bill Nicholson of the Cubs established a new league record by hitting four home runs in a doubleheader and also tied the major league mark, and es tablished a new national loop record, by hitting four home runs in four consecutive times at bat. It was a close contest all the way with .Ashland leading 11 to 10 at the end of the first quarter and still ahead 22 to 21 at the halfway mark. In the third period the Pirates rang a couple of lucky shots and moved into the lead and had a 34 to 32 ad vantage at the end of the period. , After the first two minutes of play not more than three points separated the two teams at any one time.
