RANDOLPH BEATS
AIR FORCE 13-3
OH SNOWY FIELD
Final Goal Line Stand Wins
. A.A.F. Layden's Tackle
: Saves Score.
New York, Dee. 16 U.B The
Randolph Field Ramblers, taking
tn lha skvwavs despite definitely
"bad flying weather," defeated
the Second Air . Force Super
bombers 13 to 6 today to win the
AAF football championship,
staving off a touchdown In the
final minute with a brilliant
goal line stand.
Played before hardy gather
ing of 8 356 fans who braved a
fury of snow flurries, for the
treasury department's $79,800,-
000 bond bowl promotion, the
Texas "West Pofnt of the Air"
eleven was tested thoroughly for
the first time in an all-victorious
season that netted . 11 straight
victories.
- It was a bone-crushing battle
between super-charged lines and
ever-running backflelds but an
early margin, secured through
second and third period touch
downs, gave Randolph the vic
tory despite the great offensive
display by the Superbombers In
the final moments.
Almost simultaneously with
the opening klckoff the snow
started and saan made the
trampled Polo grounds' turf a
sodden mass. After 10 minutes,
the players on both teams, des
pite their gaudy uniforms, look
ed like doughboys fresh out of
fox holes.
Although it appeared at times
that the alert Superbombers of
fense would assert itself for an
ultimate victory, the Issue actual
ly was settled in the final 29
seconds of the first period when
Pete Layden, ex-University of
Texas star lobbed a 83-yard pass
to End Harry Burrus, who tuck
ed It in on the five-yard line and
went over undisturbed.
A heartbreaking tackle by
Layden In the last second of the
first half prevented the Super
bombers from tying the score.
Evans was swarmed by tacklers
,s he attempted a touchdown
pass from the 13 and ran straight
through the center of the line
, where Layden nailed him, a yard
and a half from the goal.
