' The hair shaft Is not hollow and does not "bleed" when cut, the hair being nourished through its root the roots, em bedded in the cuplike depres sions in the skin called follicles, are supplied with arteries and veins. The hair roots and follicles are mostly oblique (slanting) in reference to the surface ex cept the coarse hairs in ear canals, nostrils and edges of eyelids flashes) which are per pendlcular. The hairs on the head and over the body surface generally have minute muscles attached to their slanting shafts. When these muscles (called ar rectores pilorum) contract under the stimulus of cold or fright, they make the hairs stand out or "on end". This gives the skin surfaces where the hairs are almost invisible fine down the appearance of "gooseflesh" (cutis anserina). The obliquity of the hair of head, beard and entire body (hair covers the. entire body surface except palms, soles, pre putial and labial surfaces and backs of terminal phalanges of fingers and toes) follows a con stant pattern of whorls, from the crown of the head toward the left behind and around to ward the right in front, as man who shaves himself Is well aware. On the backs of ' the hands and arms and the legs and feet the hairs slant out wards, likewise on the backs of the fingers and toes. Hair on the scalp grows at the rate of one-half Inch a month, a little more In young persons and In summer, a little less in older persons, and In winter. Wilson calculated the average j..n. .min haa 120 000 hairs. Stelwagond found a person with light blond nair naa iu,uuu hairs on head; one with red hair only 90,000 hairs; one with brown hair, 109,000 hairs; one with black hair 108,000. The hair on the head of a woman Is coarser than that of a man with hair of the same color. Blond or light colored hair is usually finer (smaller diameter) than brunet or dark colored hair. Straight hair has a round shaft contour; curly or wavy hair has an oval or flattened contour. Naturally curled or wavy hair becomes more curly or wavy when the air Is very humid or moist or damp; arti ficially curled or waved hair loses its curl or wave In damp weather. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Barljr Up I have had thru children and I was much Interested In your article telling ot the pracUce of getting the mother up and about in three or four dayi alter childbirth. The wflret part of having a baby la lust that having to lie abed for exactly nine dayi (I Infer that the organs miraculously fall back Into normal place In precisely nine days) when one feels fine and would like to get up and go about her or dinary acUvities. (Mrs. N. L. 8.) Answei Well, next time engage an up-to-date physician, and you'll have a good chance of doing just so. So far as everything getting back Into normal place la concerned, that Is more likely to occur if the woman Jets up the third or fourth day than t Is If she lies for a week or more longer. From the very first a woman should do systematic exercises three or four times a day while she remains In bed.
