The guerrilla colonel decided this, was a golden opportunity for an ambush and to try out the Garand rifles which he had Just received for his little army. Ambush Works A lieutenant and 20 men cross ed the bay In outrigger canoes to slip around behind the Ja panese and the larger force mov ed out to the north fora frontal attack. It worked like a charm. The smaller force cut In behind the Japs and took up positions on each side of a 100-yard cause way and on a hill about 500 yards to the rear. When the Ja panese came out In the open and started to cross, the guer rillas opened up. The Japanese were so surprised they Just stood in confusion for a few minutes.
