I, IM4 Play-By-PIay Account of State Title Football Game .', Br Harrf Chlpman Following ii a play-by-play account ot the Medford-La Grande state championship foot ball game played in Portland: ' Courtney opened the game by kicking off to Bostwlck of Med lord on the Black Tornado 20 yard line. Bostwick returned it ,to the 36. Doty picked up three yards and Clark made aix. Wat aon then made a three-yard gain for a first down on Medford's 48. Clark then lost one yard arid a reverse from Watson to Doty lost two yards. Watson tossed a pass over the line to Riggs which picked up eight yards. Doty punted to the La Grande 24, the safety man being downed In his tracks. Courtney picked up a yard and a pass from Carey to Marrs was good for 14 yards and a first down. Courtney then made a yard and Terry gathered in eight. A pass from Carey, in tended for Courtney, went in complete and La Grande took time out. Courtney got off a 36 yard kick to the Medford 17. Watson made two yards and Clark crashed left tackle for four yards. Courtney .was in jured on the play and La Grande took time out. Clark, on a fake kick, made a yard. Doty kicked to the La Grande 37 and Court ney returned it ten yards. , '- Kllgore went through left tackle tor two yards and a pass from Carey to Courtney was in complete. Courtney made a yard and then kicked to the Medlord five-yard line and the Tornado took time out. As play was resumed, Bost wick pulled the Tornado out of a nice hole with a 32-yard gain, Clark picked up a yard and Bostwick, in an attempt to skirt his left end, lost four as the quarter ended. Medford showed superior line play in the initial quarter when they had a net yardage gain of 40 to La Grande's 21. The Torna do made two first downs to the Tigers' one, although neither team presented a scoring threat. Second Quarter Watson,1 looking for a pass receiver, was spilled on the 10 by Marrs for a seven-yard loss. Doty then kicked out of danger to the La Grande 46, Courtney being tackled in his tracks by Riggs. A pass from Carey to Marrs gained 11 yards. Carey then tried a pass to Courtney which was intercepted by Bost wick on the Medford 21-yard stripe and he raced down the sidelines for 79 yards to score. Watson kicked the extra point squarely between the posts to give Medford a 7-to-0 lead. Watson kicked off to the La Grande 30 where Marrs took the ball and returned it to the La Grande 41, He fumbled when tackled and Green recovered for Medford. Doty, attempting to " V. Bostwick picked up four and Barnhart made a first down. Doty gathered in five yards and a reverse from Watsor. to Bost wick galled to gain, aa Medford took time out. Watson, Into the line, ' failed to gain. Bostwick made two, but it was not enough for a first down and La Grande took over. Terry made a yard and Kll gore picked up two. Courtney, played it safe, booted out of bounds on the Medford 44. Wat son lost a yard as S telle came in as quarterback, Watson go ing to fullback and Doty went out of the game. Barnhart went through the line for nine yards and Watson picked up one for a first down. Bostwick gained a yard and a pass from Stelle to Plaskett went Incomplete, Med ford was penalized five yards for backfield in motion and Barnhart picked up four of it a Doty came back In. Doty kicked to the La Grande 19 where Courtney took it and re turned it to the 29. Kllgore was held for no gain and La Grande drew a 19-yard penalty for holding. A pass from Carey, intended for Courtney, was intercepted by Watson on the-La Grande 28. Bostwick made six yards and a pass from Watson, intended for R i g g s, went incomplete. Courtney then intercepted a pass from Watson and ran it back to the Medford 47 where he was tackled by Sheldon. A pass from Carey to Marrs went incomplete and Terry was held for no gain on the next play as the half ended with Medford still enjoying a 7-0 bulge. ' In that period Medford had another scoring opportunity, but it was broken up by the sharp playing of Courtney, Except for the touchdown run, the teams seemed to be on an even keel although Medford again gather ed the bulk of the yardage. -Third Quarter To open the second half, Wat son kicked off to the LaGrande eight with Kllgore returning it to his 34. Eldridge was hurt on the play and LaGrande took time out. Courtney was thrown for a four yard loss by Watson but Kilgore made it back on the next play. A pass from Carey intended for Marrs, was inter cepted, by Cave on the Medford 38. Doty made a yard and Bost wick was held for no gain in an attempt to run hli right end. Bostwick hit tackle for no gain and Doty kicked into the end lone. , LaGrande took the ball on their own 20 yard line, Terry went through left guard for five yards and was stopped by Cave. Watson broke through the line and threw Terry for a three yard loss. Courtney then kicked to Bostwick on the midfleid stripe, who returned it to the LaGrande 46. Doty made a half yard, then six and Bostwick picked up a yard. Clark then went through the center of the line for 10 yards and a first down. Bost wick made two and Watson pick ed up one. Doty ran left end for four yards as, LaGrande took time out. On the next play Clark took a pass from Watson and as he was being tackled, lateral ed to Doty who raced 19 yards to cross the goal line standing up. Watson again kicked the ex tra point, with Bostwick hold ing. Watson's kick-off went out of bounds on the LaGrande 28 and it was put in play on the 40, according to the rules. Doty made two and Watson four as the Tor nado drew a five-yard penalty for too much time between plays. On the next play Watson fum bled but it was recovered by Bostwick on Medford's 44. Doty then punted to Courtney on La Grande's 18. Terry made a yard as the third quarter came to a close. Except for a brief period in the fourth quarter the play was in LaGrande's part of the field. Medford's weight advantage was beginning to show as the Tor nado outcharged and generally outplayed the eastern Oregon champions. ' Fourth Quarter The final period was opened by Courtney picking up two yards and then kicking to Bost wick on the Medford 49, who re turned it to the 48. Medford drew a 19 yard penalty for clip ping on the play. Doty and Barn hart each picked up four yards and Bostwick three for a first down. Watson was held for no gain and Bostwick lost three. Doty picked up two and then was forced to kick but it was blocked by Terry and went out of bounds on Medford's 30 yard line. The Tornado then took time out. Terry then went 10 yards for a first down. He was held for no gain and Sheldon was hurt on the play but remained in the game. Carey's pass for Marrs was knocked down by Doty and a pass to Sherwood went incom plete. Bostwick knocked down a pass from Carey to Marrs and Medford took over. It as La Grande's deepest, penetration -of tne game. Bostwick picked up five yards and Barnhart added 18 for a first and ten on Medford's 43. Doty mude a yard Into the line and Bostwick picked up two more. Doty made 6V4 yards on the next play and then Clark made a first down with a yard sain, Doty'i fumble .was recovered by ijauranae on their own 45. Carey got six yards and was stopped by Cave. Terry made a yard and a pass from Carey to Marrs was good for 20 yards to the Medford 33. Carey tried an other pass which was Intercept ed by Watson on the Medford o ana returned to tne 24. La Grande took time out. Watson made three yards and LaGrande drew a 16 yard pen alty for unnecessary roughness. Coach Al Simpson then sent in an almost entire second team. Gorman lost a yard and Stelle. in attempting to pass, was smoth ered for a five yard loss. Gor man was held for no gain as the game ended. Medford seemed to let down somewhat in the latter part of me unai penoa but still out gained the game and fighting U.Grande club. It was uncmes- tionably Medford's game all the way with their superior weight telling after the first period. Trophy Awarded Captain Dean Sheldon of the winning team was presented a tropny symbolic of the Oreeon high school football champion ship by Leonard B. Mayfield, former Medford high school principal, immediately after the game. During the half, among those speaking over the radio, were Crawford "Peachy" Lemmon, formerly of the Medford school board, Chief Petty Officer Nor man Worthley, former Medford Junior high coach who has Just arrived in the states from duty in the South Pacific, and Billy Hulen, former sports editor on the Medford Mall Tribune. In County Jail John Gipson Tyler, 37, from Illinois, is in the county jail on a charge of ob taining money on false preten ses, according to a police report. Tyler reportedly passed a bad check for $20 at Glenn H. Utz's men's store and a bad check for $13 at the M & M department store sometime last week. The checks were made out to Tyler, police said. Patterson arrived in Medford last Sunday, having been grant ed a furlough because of the death of his stepmother. Mrs. John Patterson of Grants Pass.
