Calif. - EVERYBODY'S MECCA A reader writes, I am 05 years old and I have had chronic bronchitis Perhapi it Is ill-bred to in ter r u pt like this, but as I was b r o ught up in a saw mill it is only in the last few years that I have acquired any urbanity to speak of, and I thought it might be of Di Brady more interest to some of you if we mentioned here that . familiar names for chronic bropchitis are "winter cough" and "bronchial catarrh", or even but, no, I hate to think the dumbest reader of this column is so blankety-blanked dumb as to call it you you know-what on the chet-f-that'S out. I have had chronic bronchitis for years but recent examina tion of chest shows no activity. Believe the present condition is called bronchiectasis . Hang onto your hats, folks, we're off again. Bronchiectasis is dilatation or expansion or bal looning of one or more of the bronchial tubes. I have to live in a dry climate to enjoy any degree of com fort That's the hellovlt the quest for a dry climate, I mean. There are about 125,000,000 Invalids, near-invalids and molly-coddles in the United States, I estimate, who descend on the elusive dry climate like a swarm of locusts If any one ever discovers such a climate. Believe it or not, the corres pondent lived in Mecca, when he asked for directions to the near est dry climate. The citation, as carried in a war department general order, reads: "The 299th engineer combat battalion is cited for outatand iiik ucixuiiiiaiiue qi auiy in H . , ,. . tlon. The 299th engineer combat battalion, as part of a special engineer demolition task forse, was attached to the 1st United States infantry division for the assault,, with the mission of clearing the beach obstacles within the tidal range of the beach from the vicinity of Vler- ville-sur-Mer to Collevllle-ur-Mer, Normandy, France. "The battalion was organized into eight assault demolition teams, four support demolition teams and a command. Each de molition team was landed in an LCM at 0633, 6 June, 1944, and was equipped with a ton of ex plosives and accessories, all of which were hand carried. "Because of the rising tide it was necessary to execute the demolition of the outer (sea ward) obstacles within 30 min utes after landing. The battalion was equipped with tank dozers, 60 per cent of which did not reach the beach in operating condition. The demolition teams worked from 0633 to approxi mately 1330 under extremely heavy enemy fire, both artillery and small arms fire until ap proximately 1600, 7 June, 1944. . "The operation was further complicated because the Infan try and other troops were within the danger radius of obstacle demolition. The battalion worked with little food or rest' until 9 June, 1944, suffering approxi mately. 33- per .cent casualties. It was necessary, In at least four Instances, for teams to In terrupt their work and attack enemy sniper positions in the hills. "The mission of the battalion was completed under extremely difficult and hazardous condi tions which required extraordi nary heroism and determination on the part of each Individual. "The esprit de corps of the 299th engineer combat battalion exhibited In ihla action ll worthy of the highest praise." ' The 299th . was activated at Camp White lit March, 1944, and went through basic training at this camp. In July, 1943, the battalion went on maneuvers In the Oregon maneuver ground, remaining under the Jurisdiction of Camp White until the end of the maneuver period in October, 1943, when it moved to Ft.
