' She's a telephone operator In a telegraph office and says tt'i ! a good thing girls don't know how exciting the work Is or there wouldn't be enough Jobs ot this kind to go around. I said rd hate the work since most telegrams tell of deaths in the family. She said not any more; that now people send tele grams about everything Imagin able. Oh, there were some sad ones but If they were too sad. she let the girl working next her read them over the phone since she could better take that sort of thing. Some telegraph offices 'refuse to send silly messages but the one where she works seldom , draws the line. They even sent ; ine message irom a . rjoy 10 a girl which read, "You are won derful " and on for 25 "won derfuls." Had I received that message I'd have been suspicious and thought with Shakespeare, "It seemth me he doth protest too much. One message she remembers! was from a wife to a husband and went, "Left iron in laundry. . Did the house burn down?" No I return message was sent and to this day she often wonders if the house did burn down. Another telegram, wife to husband: "Meat in kettle in base ment. "Use it." The operator was very sure she'd not like that woman. In the first place, the basement was no place to put that meat but most of all she re sented that "Use it!" Probably the poor henpecked guy had to eat that meat, spoiled or not. Many messages are from sons iu iiiumers Hatting ior money. 1 er was greatly agitated. "But 1 just wired him $50 last night. What have you done with it?" she belligerently demanded of the girl. In fact the message the girl will remember longest came was from a boy to his mother: "Send me birth certificate and $100; I'm getting married." The moth er came right down to the tele graph office the minute the mes sage had been read to her oyer the phone. Had her boy gone crazy, she asked them. Who was he marrying? Why did he want his birth certificate? To all of which the girl could only reply, "Sorry, Ma'am, but we have no information."
