Pearl Harbor, Nov. 20 (U.R)
The drab little carrier escorts

Whitehead, who was comman

of only six of their own aircraft
in the first nine days of the
Leyte campaign.
This figure Included only Jap
planes destroyed in support of
ground operations and does not
include the 443 destroyed or
damaged by combined operation
of the 3rd and 7th fleets in the
second battle of the Philippines
sea, he said.
The CVE planes did yeoman

Many, unable to get back to
their ships, the first night of the
battle, had to land on Tacloban

U. S. engineers were still work

' along a 800-mile German
front yesterday, destroyed at
least 86 Nazi aircraft including
more than 30 ot the Luftwaffe's

The Allied aerial pincers
from west and south hit Ger

While 800 fighter escorted

Munich,
RAF Lancasters were - back
in action again last night, at
tacking the synthetic oil plant
at Wanne-Henelckel in the Ruhr,

more; that now people send tele

she let the girl working next

One message she remembers!
was from a wife to a husband
and went, "Left iron in laundry. .
Did the house burn down?" No I
return message was sent and to
this day she often wonders if
the house did burn down.
Another telegram, wife to
husband: "Meat in kettle in base

very sure she'd not like that
woman. In the first place, the
basement was no place to put
that meat but most of all she re
sented that "Use it!" Probably
the poor henpecked guy had to
eat that meat, spoiled or not.
Many messages are from sons

just wired him $50 last night.
What have you done with it?"
she belligerently demanded of
the girl.
In fact the message the girl
will remember longest came was
from a boy to his mother: "Send
me birth certificate and $100;
I'm getting married." The moth
er came right down to the tele
graph office the minute the mes
sage had been read to her oyer
the phone. Had her boy gone
crazy, she asked them. Who was
he marrying? Why did he want
his birth certificate? To all of
which the girl could only reply,
"Sorry, Ma'am, but we have no
information."
I was glad she hadn't been
the one on duty when a message
