Known as Boeing model 377 during Its development, the new plRne has been christened the Stratocrulser and is the first of the postwar supertransports to be completed by any company, . 100 Passengers C. He said It would carry up to 100 passengers at a cruising speed of 340 miles an hour and a top speed of 400, over a range of 3500 miles with a 30,000 foot ceiling, at a direct operating co: of one cent per passenger mile The Stratocrulser has the same 141-foot wlngspread as the B-29, but its fuselage is 12 feet longer at 110 feet. Its gross weight is 65 tons. A sleeper plane with 72 day seats or 36 berths in the 60 foot long main cabin and 14 seats in the observation and dining lounge on the lower deck, 8. A all cargo plane with a drive-up ramp in the rear and space for a cargo payload of 35,000 pounds at an operational cost of five cents a ton mile. Four Powerful Engines The plane is powered with four engines of 3500 horsepower each at takeoff, a total plant twice as large as the most pow erful railroad locomotive. The test pilots said the plane was the easiest to operate they had ever flown. Controls are handled direct with no power boost required. An operating crew of four will fly the plane on long ocean hops, with three persons in the Stewart's department. The crew will include pilot, co-pllot, flight engineer and navigator-radioman. Transcontinental operation requires pilot, co-pilot and flight engineer-radioman with two in tne steward's department. Egtvedt also . revealed that while desgnlng and building the stratocrulser, Boeing was draft ing designs for other types of postwar planes including feeder line and local service aircraft.
