EIGHT MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE " Sunday. Not. IS. 1944 Your Health and Its Care BY OR. WILLIAM BRADY. M. O. Reader should addxatt 'lnqulriai to; Dr. William Brady . . 268 El Camino. Bovwly HUUvCaW. WHO CARES WHAT ' "Robert Louis Stevenson was tubercular,", a remarkably well Informed correspondent reminds me, , ' Dut me Immediate cause of his death," the C or respondent adds, "was rupture of, an aortic aneur ism, a malady that has, sup posedly, causal relation to S p 1 r o chaata pallida." Or Brad? All I know about Stevenson's Illness and death Is what I read In biogra phies. I had gained the Impres sion that Stevenson was tubecu lous, not tubercular there Is a difference, as we shall see and that he succumbed finally to apoplexy, a stroke or shock, rupture of a veswl and hemor rhage Into the substance of the brain. ' Tubercle Is a nodule or lump or swelling either on the sur face br, in the substance of an organ. Tubercles are character istic of more than one disease, notably leprosy, lupus, and ad vanced syphilis. - These diseases are tubercular) but only tuber culosis Is tuberculous. It Is true that aortic aneur ism (dilatation or ballooning of the great artery) occurs as a rule In men who have had syphilis for fifteen or twenty years, with final involvement of the cardiovascular (heart-artery) system. Splrochaeta pallida is one name for the specific germ of syphilis. It is otherwise known as Treponema pallida. , . My correspondent . himself now getting along, is or rath- er was tuberculous, "The only injunction laid on me by Dr. Trudeau, when I was a victim of tb, was," he writes (tb. being the abbreviation for - tubercu losis). "Never get chilled.' The soundness of that advice was, I think, indisputable. . . . I am sure that chilling may usher in colds. That many persons fail ' to catch cold as a result of chill- BACK FROM TRIP Charles W. Austin,' local milk and dairy inspector ' who just returned from a vacation . trip to the midwest, Chicago and Cleveland, states that he was glad to hear while away that many people have finally learn ed where ' Oregon is located geographically, that Its. capital is Salem instead of Los Angeles and that Crater Lake is not in California. : ' Mr. Austin stated that boun tiful crops were being harvested in the sections he visited and that October was a beautiful month, as it was here. The in spector said he was pleased to hear many people talking about the Rogue River luscious pears. "I was asked about Harry and Dave, who seem to be making 'foot prints' into many homes with their pamphlets. Also the 'Blue Goose appeared to be flying high over - Chicago and Cleveland. "I stepped into a lumber yard sales room, Introducing myself as from Medford, Ore., and the proprietor remarked 'quite a coincidence here Is a catalog just received from the Ameri can Fruit company touting their Christmas pears; are they any good?' I assumed he meant the pears, of course, so I did my best in efforts akin to Bill Gates to spread the fertility of our soil and the features of our climate, which combine Ideal conditions to grow a luscious CORN REMOVER Cluae uuuat nllal tress pals and t'U Mr removes hard eerea. ana eena bet-aae, Ike toaa. calknieaa. warn, papillomas, dab BalnC Il esatalaa aev era! dUteroal alia that eenem, neesa aa4 doaa aM cause the UvluUoa aa ale strene add ssuttuiee. 'I must admit that 's stuff is of more Interest and value to me." ! Probably -' 'g - stuff con forms more-' carefully to - the quaint traditions that exposure to cold, dampness or chilling is a dangerous thing and a cause or a predisposing factor of what ever illness you happen to have. After all, who- am- I to ques tion the' belief or opinion or teaching or advice of an Osier, a Trudeau or any other great dead merlcal authority? Let's leave the dead men out of it. .If you can quote a living medical authority, in not more than a hundred words, I'll go to the mat with him. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Tuberculosis ' This pamphlet telle about reelitance to tuberculoe Is. You claim -there la no scientific bails for the Idea of realat ance. (B. L. 6.) ' Answer That la true, BO far as the common use of the term Is concerned. The pamphlet ''How Your Pndv Fights TB," issued by National Tuber oulosia association, 17S0 Uroadwu. ,4 Y. City, is an excellent one, In it the word ''resistance" obviously meana IMMUNITY. Immunity Is aclenUflcal ly recoiniied, definite, clinically measurable. "Resistance" la Just a lot of hooey, wherever and whenever the term la employed In medical litera ture. Garllo Tor my high blood pressure I have been taking garlic pills, but they are very expensive. (R. B.) Answer Neither garllo itself nor any extract, concentrate or deriva tive of It. has any effect on blood pressure. Lucky (for your welfare) the nostrum Is expensive. High blood pressure, like high body temperature or high pulse rate, occurs as a man ifestation or aymptom of many dif ferent disease conditions. Therefore It Is silly to try this or that remedy which purporta to be good for It. Jn atead of aquanderlng your money on such nostrum, you should Invest In an examlnaUon by a good doctor and leave It to the doctor to decide what. If anything, to do about the blood pressure. Pores " Kindly send me literature on ports. I claim the porea cannot absorb, but only give vent to secreUons. (E. M.) Answer Consult any standard text book of anatomy or physiology, In the publlo library. You are right. The akin cannot absorb anything through the "pores" or otherwise. We were, also asked concern ing our timber, so It evidently does pay .to advertise. v I was courteously asked to accompany two milk and dairy inspectors on one of their daily rounds, which I did.. C, chief of the board's investigation section, seeking to learn the cause of the accident which took 24 lives, The 20 ranchers testifying all admitted that they did not see the explosion but that they dis tinctly heard It. Additional testimony was giv en, by K. C.
