SILVER STAR IS RIVER SOLDIER Somewhere In the Southwest Pacific: Because he crawled along beach under shallow water open to enemy fire in or der to locate and kill an enemy sniper holding up the advance of his troops, the commanding general of the First Cavalry di vision awarded the Silver Star to Private Gervln O. Preslar, son of Mrs. Josephine Preslar, Rogue River, Oregon." Private Preslar was decorated for his outstanding heroism and gal lantry in action above and be yound the call of duty during the campaign which gained control of the strategic Admir alty Islands. The incident for which Pri vate Preslar was decorated was described as follows- in the cita tion awarding him the Silver 'Star: "His troops were suffering numerous casualties inflicted by an enemy, sniper who could not be located in the dense jungle. Medford WAC To Take Training At " Fort Des Moines Mrs. Ardis Dae Orr, daughter of Mrs. Nora Hansen, Post Of fice Box 321, requested a.Job in which she could be of the most service to her country when she enlisted recently in the Wom en's Army Corps in Portland, Oregon. - - Two of - the members of her family are now in the armed forces; her husband, Seaman, 1st Class, Ira V. Orr, stationed in Chicago, and her brother, Sgt. Norman R. Hensen, in the Air Forces stationed in Italy. At the. completion of her basic training course at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Orr will be sent to Great Falls, Montana, for duty with the Air Transport Command. Mrs. Orr contacted the local recruiting office in the Post Office Building for information about the WAC enlistment. Brownsboro Brownsboro, Nov. 9 Mr. and Mrs. Dick Richards of San Fran cisco spent their vacation here recently with Mrs. Richards' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Mes sal, en route to their new home in Vancouver, Wash. Cpl. Charles Stanley who re cently visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Stanley, is now at Fort Benning, Ca., for glider training. Wright and Miss Lois Wright of Portland, who were visiting with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Wright. A hard time Hallowe'en party as enjoyed by most of the Brownsboro young people Mon day night, October 30, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Rutledge. A prize was given to the tackiest person attending which went to Jimmy Trammell. Various games were played fol lowed by refreshments enjoyed. Attending were: Lucille Lenhair, Delora Beany, Betty Caldwell, Ethel Caldwell, Dorothy Wright, Kenneth Walch, John Wilson, Jack Steel, Roney Renfro, Dell Wilson, Bob Buch, Jimmy Tram mell, Benjamin Martinez, Adolf Vallejo, George Ortiz, Henry Campos, Evelyn Rutledge, Ruth Rutledge and Phyllis Cahail of Eagle Point. Miss Eileen Buck of Medford spent the week-end here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F Buck. Mr. and Mrs. Cook and three children of San Diego, Calif., have purchased the Ed Fernland ranch, and expect to make their home here. Mr. arid Mrs. Kermit OeHaas of Brownsboro were evening guests at the A. R. Rutledge home November 3. Mr. Beany who recently pur chased the Reed Charley ranch just returned from a business trip to Elko, Nev. , Floyd Charley left November 6 for Long Beach, Calif., where he will visit his son, Eldred Charley, who has just arrived from Puerto Rico. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hansen were dinner guests at the Walch home in Lake Creek November 5. Mr. and Mrs. John Keenney of Stockton, Calif., are visiting at the Pillon home. Mrs. Keen ney is Mrs. Pillon's sister. Miss Lois Wright and Mrs. H. W. Wright were hostesses at a tea Thursday. Present were Mrs. Clark and daughter, Mrs. Mary Connor and children, Jo and Walter, Mrs. Dorothy McCor mich and daughter, Barbara, all of Medford. Mrs. Almeda Horse ly of Antelope and Mrs. Marie Walch and daughters, Betty Lou and Shirley. A Hallowe'en pie social was held in the Brownsboro school house October 31. S There are 13 young men from Oregon and Washington in the Santa Monica Army Air Forces Redistribution station now, all veterans of overseas service, all well decorated with medals and service stripes. On the list are the names of two; men from Medford. First Lt. Robert Wilcox, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Wilcox, Rt. &, chucked bombs on Italy as B-26 bombar dier. His 50 missions include one ditching. He wears the Air Medal with four clusters. Staff Sgt. Donald Lawrence, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lawrence, 1017 W. Main street in Medford, married Audrey Janice Lawrence in England. Gunner on both B-17's and B 25's, Sgt. Lawrence had 16 mis sions in the Aleutians and 31 in England. He has received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf clusters.
