FOTJS MTOTORD MML TRTBUWS Thursday. Oct 19, 1944 TRUMAN STATES opposjm gop FDR Running Mate Claims Nation Needs Experienced Leadership to Win War. JACKSON COUNTY FARM NOTES Compiled by County Office 0. S. C. Extension Service With Senator Truman En Route to Seattle, Oct. 19 U.R- Sen. Harry S. Truman completes the west coast lee of his cam paign trip today In Washington, which is acutely conscious of post-war reconversion problems Truman, Democratic nominee for the vice presidency, will ap pear at a Democratic rally to nlfiht at Seattle to deliver a radio address pointed at those problems. He also expects to reiterate the administration view toward the Riant Grand Coulee and Bonneville power projects which have been closely linked to Industrial expansion In the northwest. Projects Opposed ' The nominee told a Democra tic rally at Portland last night that the projects were partly responsible for the tremendous wartime expansion of aluminum production needed for airplanes and that they had been "bitter ly opposed" by Republicans In congress. Truman also charged that the Republican platform and presi dential candidate "straddle every Issue" and asserted again that the nation needed exper ienced leadership to win the war and the peace. 'The same old gang that tried to turn the clock back in 1920 is standing at the door waiting for a chance to come in and turn the clock back," he said. Accuses Dewey Truman asserted that Gov. R. Breithaupt, O.S.C. extension ag ricultural economist. Latest fig ures of the U. S. Department of Agriculture show the index of prices for all farm products Just slightly lower than a year ago, while the index of prices paid is up about 4 per cent, not in eluding labor. The farm wage In, dex is around 20 per cent high er These trends suggest that the peak of high net income from farming during this war may be reached roon if not already pass ed. The situation varies some what, depending upon the type of farming. Compared with I year ago, the current position of crop pro ducts generally is more favor able than of animal products as a group. The general price level of all crop products is about 4 per cent higher and of all Bnl mal products about 4 per cent lower than a year ago. Much of the increase In prices for crop products is due to higher prices for tobacco, hay. corn, and wheat. Dairy products have lost purchasing power, although the general average of prices Is slightly higher. On the whole, farm product prices were rated at 113 per cent of parity at mid-September down one point from mid-August and S points below Septem ber. 1043. Attention Is called to some significant relationships between trends In farm real estate prices and net farm Income. Five times In the past 33 years, the figures show, the trend of land prices has followed a change In the trend of net farm Income In about a year. Dairy Association Means Business At a meeting of dairymen held Charleston, W. Va., and told "the old guard he didn't mean It at all." He said he wanted no more men killed than necessary to de feat Germany and Japan and that the country could "not af ford to take a chance on a new commander In chief at this stage of the war." ' Moving into Washington to day, Truman was accompanied by Sen. Mon C. Wallgren. Demo cratic gubernatorial nominee for that state, on a motor trip to Seattle. They planned stops at Centralis, Olympla and Tacoma. Although Democrats were optimistic about the prospects of carrying Washington for the Roosevelt-Truman ticket, they were worried about the outcome of Wallgren's race with Repub lican Gov. Arthur B. Langlle, who is seeking reelection. The only military execution In Maine's history took piace at state prison in Thomaston, Me. Jeremiah Braun was hanged aft er he was convicted of having guided a British raiding party that in 1780 captured Gen. Peg leg Wadsworth, a grandfather of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Small Seed Crops Going Into Sacks With a favorable threshing season with few delays in oper ations, the small seed crop for this season is rapidly being sack ed In this section. Clover yields are not up to normal this year in most Instances. The sale of the crop Is not yet complete but expectations for good prices will probably be fulfilled. Pure seed of the higher grades is in demand and mixtures may be a little slower. R. G.
