TheVrne,' I .IJfUZ Discussion Group Of AAUW, League Starts Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Starnes and their two children, Warren and Sue, will leave Monday fori Portland where they will make their home. Mr. Starnes, former manager of the Firestone com pany here, will manage one of the company's stores in Port land. The family came here seven years ago and during their stay both Mr. and Mrs. Starnes have been active in social and civic circles of the city and have made a wide circle of friends. Mrs. Starnes has been especi ally active in the program of the Graduate1 Nurses association here and served as president of the group in recent months and as instructor of home nursing at the senior high school. Among farewell parties for Mrs. Starnss last week was a bridge party given by Mrs. Clyde Webb at her home on West Main street. A small group of Mrs. Starnes' close friends were invited. Mrs. Clyde Leon ard received the prize for high bridge score and the guest of honor was presented with a gift. Thursday night members of a bridge club to which Mrs. Portland address will be 4517 N.E. 39th street and the children will attend the Beaumont school. Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Jacquemin have purchased the Starnes' home at 1112 Reddy avenue. ! College Women Committee Meets Members of the executive committee of the Rogue River Valley College Women's club met at the Hotel Medford Sept. 30 for one o'clock luncheon. Re ports of standing committees were heard and matters of in terest to the club were discussed. Officers present, were Mrs. H. S. Chirgwin, president; Mrs. G. S. Jennings, vice-president; Mrs. A. V. Hardy, secretary; Mrs. W. E. Haskins, treasurer. Standing committees were represented by Mrs. F. J. Newman, program; Mrs. F. V. Barrett and Mrs. Vic tor Birdseye, social; Mrs. G. O. The meeting will be Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Jus tin Smith, who leads the group, at 8 o'clock. This year the discussion will center around the topic of United States foreign policy in the post war reconstruction period. Meet ings will be held the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of each month. This will make the fifth year that the discussion group has met. Originally the group con sisted of league members only, but for the past two years mem bers of the AAUW have joined. Mrs. Smith, state foreign policy chairman for AAUW and presi dent of the league, has been leader of the group since its or ganization. Among the women who plan to attend the group discussion this year are Mrs. Edwin H. Hal liwail. Miss Vera Humphrey, Mrs. Vernon Whitehouse, Miss Helen Parish, Miss Elizabeth Mc Galliard, Miss Josephine Koppes, Miss Delie Whisenant, Mrs. C. Rease Braley, Mrs. Robert Shep herd, Mrs. H. G. Mayor In Portland To Attend Meeting Mayor and Mrs. Clarence Meeker and their daughter, Eleanor, left Friday night for Portland where the mayor-spent Saturday attending a meeting of the board of directors of the League of Oregon Cities, held at the Heathman Hotel. Lyle Lindlcy, new superin tendent of schools for Phoenix, spoke and among other things stated that the annual school carnival is being planned and that cooperation of the com munity will be needed to make it successful. Mrs." R, ll. Hamblin, execu tive secretary of the Girl Scouts, spoke on the need of Girl Scout leaders in the Phoenix district, stating that there were not now sufficient leaders to carry on Scout activities in that district. Room mothers for the year were chosen during the after noon. About 30 attended the meeting. CLOTHING DRIVE FOR EUROPEANS STARTS MONDAY Collection of clothing for des titute of the newly liberated sec tions of war-torn Europe wiii be gin at 10 a.m. Monday at the collection center located in the former Al Piche hardware store next to Lumon's Grocery on East Main street, it was announced Saturday by the committee in charge. The center will be open daily this week until Friday noon to receive donations of discarded yet usable men's, women's, chil dren's, and infants garments as well as all forms of bedding. Ladies of the Medford Council of Church Women will be on hand between 50 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day to receive and sort all materials brought in. It was emphasized that all clothing donated must be in ac ceptable form, clean, patched If necessary, and with all buttons intact. Shoes, gloves, rubber goods, and Impractical forms of garments not suitable for daily hard wear such as old evening gowns, etc., cannot be used. KEY PORTS, BASE ON CELEBES HIT Allied Headquarters. The big bombers unloaded 53 tons of bombs on the Kendari airdromes in daylight Thursday and that night oilier formations swept over the southwestern peninsula to hit Makassar and Mandai with 33 tons.
