October , U44 Society Miss Pennington 'And Army Officer To1 Be Wed Soon Valley friends of the Law 'rence Pennington family will be Interested to learn of the an nouncement of the engagement of Miss Betty Jane Pennington to Flight Officer Nick Gerritsen which was made recently. Date of the wedding has been tenta tively set for December, depend ing upon completion of advanc ed training which Flight Officer Gerritsen is now taking at George Field, 111., and the serv ice will be in Redding, Calif. The Penningtons resided In Medford for many years, leaving a few years ago for Bedding. After graduation from Medford senior high school Miss Penning ton attended Oregon State col lege and later the University of California at Cos Angeles. She is now on the staff of the Civil, Aeronautics association and is stationed at McClelland Field ripnr Sacramento. Calif. Flight Officer Gerritsen Is the son of Mrs. Dick Van Risen of San de Fuca, Wash. Miss Pennington's sister, Mrs. Budd Gail, makes her home In Medford at 300 Mae street. 7 Former Resident Entertained Here Mrs. Louis Putman entertain ed a few friends Wednesday eve ning at her home, 330 Haven street. In honor of her house guest, Mrs. H. A. Canariay of Roseburg. The group enjoyed an evening of conversation and re freshments were served. Present were Mrs. George Watson, Mrs. William Strode, Mrs. Charles Hopkins and Mrs. Ray Harrison. Mr. and Mrs. Canaday resided in Medford for several years and have many friends here. The rites took place September 18 in Grants Pass. After a brief wedding trip the groom returned to his training duties and Mrs. Vandagrift to Portland where she Is on the staff of the Federal Reserve bank there Mr. Vandagrift re cently graduated from army aviation prc-flight training .at the Santa Ana air base In Cali fornia and Is to be assigned to a new base. Mrs. Vandagrift plans on Joining him later. The bride at one time resided in Medford and was a student of Medford senior high school. Her parents now make their home in Vancouver. The groom, who graduated from Medford high school with the class of 1941, Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Vandagrift, 417 North Oakdale avenue. Daughters Pack Yule Packages Elta Deuel Hubbs Tent No. 11, Daughters of Union Veterans, met at the home of Mrs. Walter Rowley, 311 North Bartlelt street, Saturday, Sept. 30, to pack Christmas cans for their sons in service overseas. At a later date a meeting will be held to do the same for sons In the service in the states. Mrs. Cave Entertains Wcnonah club members met at the home of Mrs. J. O. Cave on South Holly street Thursday. After spending the morning with Red Cross sewing, a cover ed dish luncheon was served at noon and In the afternoon a busi ness meeting was held, with plans completed for a rummage sale in the near future. Next meeting will be Nov. 2 at the home of Mrs. P. M. Ald redge, 1016 Court street. r rtm Friends Receive Invitations to Gardner Wedding Friends in Medford have re ceived invitations to the wed ding of Miss Peggy Laurcne Gardner and Dr. John Trovilla Brunn, Jr., which will take place October 12 in Salt Lake City. The bride-elect is the daughter of the Very Rev. and Mrs. Her ald G. Gardner and her fiance is a Salt Lake City physician. The ceremony is to be at eight o'clock in the evening at St. Murk's Episcopal cathedral in Salt Lake City. The Very Rev. Gardner is dean of the cathe dral. The Gardners formerly resid ed in Medford, the Very Rev. Gardner at that time being rec tor of St. Mark'i Episcopal church here. Business Women Will Celebrate National Week In celebration of National Business Women's Week, which will be observed Oct. 8 to 14, members of the Medford club will breakfast together this morning and will later attend church as a group. The break fast will be at the Holland Hotel at 8:19 a.m. and the group will attend services at the First Pres byterian church. ' Those unable to attend the breakfast are asked to be at the church at 10:40 to meet the breakfast group. Another event of the week for the Business Women will be a dinner meeting at the home of Mrs. E. L. Lenox, 2322 East Main street, at which members of the Medford Zonta club will be guests. Tne dinner is scheduled for 7 o'clock. Newly Installed Auxiliary Heads To Conduct Meet Mrs. Carold J. Parker and hnr newly installed offlcem will nrn. side for the first time at the meeting of Medford Unit No. 15, American Legion Auxiliary to be held Wednesday at the arm ory. The officers were installed at a joint meeting here recently of Medford, Ashland and Grants Pass Legion posts and auxiliar ies. Following the business meet ing, scheduled for 8 p. m., the auxiliary will serve refresh ments for both post and auxili ary members. Mrs. Tom Freed and Mrs. Earl York are members of the hostess committee. In addition to Mrs. Parker the new officers are Mrs; Thomas Freed, first vice-president; Mrs. Harry R. Society Studies American Indian Members of the Adult Mii. sionory society of the First innstian cnurch continued the study of the American Indian at a meeting held at the church parlors Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Doty lead the study. At a business meeting, presid ed over by Mrs. Walter Kindred, plans were made for a rummage sale. Refreshments were served by Mrs. C. M. Hon and a committee. F. L. Club Meeting To Be Postponed F. L. Club No. 7 will not hold tho regular business meeting October 9 as previously schedul ed. Wesley League Annual Banquet Held Thursday Twenty-five young people of the Wesley League of the Meth nriist Church enioved their an nual fall banquet Thursday eve ning in the parlors oi tne church. The tables were attrac tively decorated with autumn leaves and candles and gloping fire in the fireplace furnished a special cheeriness. Following the dinner Dr. J. P. Bray gave an interesting talk nn "The Cliff Dwellers of Ari zona." The group was enter tained with reading Dy jerry Warren and Adabee Seilcr. At the annual business session plans were made for the fall and win ter work after which the follow ing officers were elected: Larry Swarner, president; John Oust erhout, vice president; Thelma Loughary, devotional cnairman; Iris Belcher, missionary cultiva tion; Lucille Seller, social serv ice; Lois Krcigcr, recreation; Ethel Wilkinson, secretary-treasurer; Adabee Seller, pianist, and Colette Sparks, song leader Election- Projects Planned Tuesday By Voters' League Pre-election activities of the Jackson County League of Wom en Voters were further planned nt the board meeting of the group held last Tuesday evening at the home of the president, Mrs. Justin Smith. These pre-election activities include the election school, which will be held Oct. 24 at the Riverside USO auditorium. I At this time candidates will be introduced and issues on the ballot will be discussed. Mrs. Richard Payne is chairman in charge of the school. Another pre-election project is distribution of a league broad side on "Your next congress must act on these issues." It was announced that a speak er has been secured for an ap pearance Thursday, Nov. 2, at the high school auditorium, Return To Medford Master Sgt. and Mrs. W. M Daws have arrived in Medlord from Van Nuys. Calif., and plan to take up residence in Medlord . Sgt. Daws, who was stationed nt the Medford air base for more than eisht years before being assigned to another station, was recently retired from the army after having been a patient In ' the Birmingham General ho.-pi tal. Van Nuys for several weeks Ills retirement terminated near ly 25 years of service with tho army. For the present Sgt. and Mrs. Daws arc at the Holland Hotel. Lodged Will Hold Hallowe'en Party At Next Meeting A Hallowe'en party will fol low the next meeting of Olive Rebekah lodge which will be held in the I.O.O.F. hall, 221 West Sixth street, Oct. 16. The Mesdamcs Julia Gregory, Sara Redden and Minnie Bryant are in charge. Meeker will 1 be a featured speaker at the dis-: triet meeting of the Methodist church to be held in Roseburg Tuesday. Mrs. Meeker, formerly a national secretary of the Wom en's Society of Christian Service, , has been much in demand as a speaker since coming to reside in this district. Also planning to attend the meeting in Roseburg are the Rev. and Mrs. Louis Kirby and Mayor Meeker. The party will leave Tuesday and return Wed ! nesday afternoon. Jacobs Is serving as president of the club this year. Following luncheon Mrs, Fran ces Cochran gave a program on Iceland, supplementing her own research material with photo graphs and literature given her by Major O. M. Miller. Major Miller, son-in-law of Mrs. Bert B. Lowry, club member, recent ly returned to this country after having been stationed In Iceland for a considerable time. Mrs. Harold L. Brown was chairman in charge of luncheon arrangements. The Wednesday Study club is the oldest women's club in the city. Miss Ham Hostess Friday Evening At Shower Party Miss Virginia Ham was host ess Friday evening at a layette shower party which honored Mrs. Edward J. Ruffo. The party was at Miss Ham's home. 203 Peach street. Miss Joanna Wyatt entertained with several vocal selections during the evening. Davis of Cocoli, Canal Zone, Panama, who described native flowers of the Canal Zone to her listeners. She mentioned espe cially the orchids and gardenias which grow in great profusion in the region. Mrs. R. T. Nichol, chairman of the club's bird- committee, talked on birds of the Rogue River valley and John Gribble spoke on cones, displaying a quantity of these. Mrs. Nellie 'Finney of Jack sonville had made several flow er arrangements for the meet ing and these were displayed. At the tea hour which fol lowed the meeting Mrs. C. C. Safer and Mrs. R. T. Nichol poured. On the hostess com mittee were Mrs. R. G. Beach, chairman, Mrs. O. H. Brenne man, Mrs. John Clark, Mrs. H. F. Cope and Mrs. H. L. Ekerson. The meeting opened in the morning when several members gathered for a laboratory ses-i sion and received instruction on making "tussy-mussies", or Colonial-type bouquets. An espe-1 cially large one was fashioned I and used with silver candle- i sticks for the centerpiece of the tea table for the afternoon so- j cial hour. i Mistletoe Camp Dance Is Planned Plans for a dance, to which the public will be invited, were made at the la,st meeting of Mis tletoe Camp, Royal Neighbors of America. The dance will be Oct. 19 at the K. of P. hall and Mrs. Pearl Miller is general chair man in charge of the affair. Ruth Bismark, vice-oracle, pre sided at the meeting in the ab sence of Oracle Elsa Walker, who is in Nebraska on an ex tended trip. Marjorie Pearson substituted as musician for Elsie Alexander, who also is in Ne braska for a time. Lady Lions Plan Christmas Boxes For Servicemen Lady Lions of Medford have undertaken as a service project the packing of Christmas boxes for servicemen overseas who have no relatives. Plans for the project were made at a meeting of the group held last week at the home of Mrs. Clyde C. Leon ard, 922 Reddy avenue. The packages will be shipped overseas on the Christmas ship, to be sponsored by the San Fran cisco Examiner. , The business meeting follow ed serving of dessert, with Mrs. Wren Orey and Mrs. Tom Flynn assisting Mrs. Leonard. First Fall Meeting Delta Debs, high school social group, will hold the first meet ing of the fall at the home of the president, Miss Regina Smith. King's Highway, Tuesday night. Miss Joan Smith will be co-hostess for the meeting, which has been scheduled for 7:30 p. m.
