Newspaper Page Text, FOUR MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday. SepJ. 28, 1944 0 AND C F ORESTS i CHURCHES OF CITY $163,001 IN YEAR AS RALLYING DAY J Jackson county' share of the total receipts from the O. St C. ; revested lands for the past fiscal year which ended June 30, 1944, will be $163,004.06, according to Floyd W. Scott, dis trict forester In charge of the Medford dis trict. This Bum was certified by the general land office of the de nnrtment of the interior on Aug ust 21 for payment to Jackson county In lieu of taxes under the act of August 28, 1037. Last year the amount received by Jackson county in lieu of taxes on the O. St C. lands was $125,799.20. On the 2,500.000 acres of O. & C. lands the counties suffer no loss of tax Income because of federal ownership. Under the above law BO per cent of the Income from the O. & C. forest lands during each fiscal year must be returned to th ) 18 Oregon counties in which the lands are located. Each coun ty participates in direct propor tion to its share of the total assessed valuation of all O. fit C. lands and receives its prorata share regardless of whether any timber 1 sold within Its borders in any given year or not. This plan of distribution helps to sta bilize revenues for all 18 counties. Revenues received by each county from O. fit C. lands in lieu of taxes may be used for roads, schools, or for any other purpose for which county funds may be spent. County revenue from this source has risen steadily year by year since 1B38, when the O. fie C. lands were placed under sustained yield management by the general land office. Timber cutting on these lands proceeds t a rate of approximately 900 million board feet annually, which Is thoir estimated capacity to grow new timber to replace the old timber as fast as it is used up. Under this plan of man agement the O. fie C. lands pro vide a permanent source of in come and therefore they are a part of the county tax base which Is Insured against being lost. A community Invitation for church mobilization purposes is under way this week by the Med ford Ministerial association which has designated Sunday as Rally Day in churches compos ing the association. Effort of the campaign is designed to enlist every family in the community and vicinity, as far as possible, to become enrolled in the Chris tian Educational phase of the church representing their par ticular choice The association, It was ex plained seeks to serve not only the youth of '.he community but the entire family, and the need of Bible study as the greatest source of character building, is urged. At a meeting of the Medford Ministerial association to be held Tuesday at 10:30 a. m at the Church of the Nazarene the group will discuss its reaction to the making of Palestine a na tional home for the Jews. An other Item Is consideration of organizing for the collection of clothing fur relief purposes to be obtained In this community to assist in relief work for Eu rope after Germany's capitula tion. The Community Chest drive also will be discussed. An appeal for the united en listment of the people of Med ford, both yong and old, in the Sunday School of their choice on Oct 1, designated as enlist ment day, was made by associ ation members. ' PARK OFFICIALS Several officials of the Na tional Park Service are at Cra ter Lake National Park today In specting the park s forests, roads, lookouts and discussing park problems with E. P. Leavilt, su perintendent, Thomns C. Parker, assistant superintendent, and Clyde E. Gilbert, chief ranger. In the pnrty are John D. Coff man, chief forester of the Na tional Park Service, with head quarters In Chicago; Burnett Sanfnrd, regional forester from the San Francisco regional of fice; Thomas E. Farmer Port- SLOGAN ADOPTED "Win the war and peace with Roosevelt" was the slogan adopted at an organization meeting of the Jackson County Democratic club held yesterday at the Medford Hotel. Georg anne Peter, vice-chairman of the Democratic Central committee of Jackson county, acted as tem porary chairman. Election of officers for the new organization will be held soon at a Joint meeting with Democratic county precinct committeemen and women. Date of the meeting will be an nounced later. At that time a speaker from either the state or national party committee is ex pected to be present and all pre cinct committeemen are request ed to be present and to bring a friend. E, Hughes of Ashland, who ad dressed the Medford tCiwanis club Wednesday noon. Major Hughes, who served as an engi neer during the canal construc tion, stated that every detail concerning the canal locks and their operation was in the hands of the Japanese long before the opening of the war. Site of the canal was chosen from several, the engineer stat ed, and the final decision was 1 influenced by Nlcaraguan post-! age stamps which a congressman I circulated among his friends at the time the decision was pend ing. Since the stamps pictured a volrano, officials decided that Nicaragua would be a poor place for tha canal, Quakes Harmless Forty nine earthquakes oc curred during construnion of the canal, MaJ. Hughes stated, but none caused any damage at that time or since. The canal could not be built at sea level because of the dif ference between Atlantic and Pacific tides, MaJ Hughes de clared Average trip through the canal consumes eight huurs. The canal and locks are the only dace In the world where the master of a ship no longer is In control, MaJ. Hughes de clared The local operator uses a mechanical contrivance made up of miniature locks and minia ture ships in guiding vessels through the canal, he said. It oc commodates all but ships of the Queen Mary size according to the major, and may be enlarged after the war. KING GOES TO PRISON FOR PAROLE VIOLATION Allan King, 22, of Ashland, sentenced to serve two years in state prison as a parole violator, was taken to Salem yesterday by Deputy Sheriff Vern Hast ings. King was under a sus pended sentence when arrested three weeks ago by the Ashland pollc, following the disappear ance of an Ashland married woman, later located in Reno. King has been involved in oth er tilts with the law the past two years. In his last appearance before the court he was warned by Circuit Judge H. K. Hanna, the prison sentence would be in voker If he return before him.
