I In the mountainous central sector, meanwhile, U. S. 5th army troops, apparently recov ered from fierce German counter-attacks, advanced as much as two miles In 24 hours at some points and recaptured the spur of Mount Alafine ridge which was lost to the enemy on Tues day. The Americans and South African troops attached to the 5th army also captured the town of Castiglione, 11 miles west of Firenzuola and about midway between Florence and Bologna, on the Florence-Frato-Bologna highway. With the capture of Castel Del Rio in the central sector, the Americans were within 19 miles of their ultimate objective, Bologna, key city of the great Po valley. London, Sept. 28 (U.Rl The German high command said to day that Russian forces had smashed across the Danube river into Yugoslavia from the iron gate area of Romania a cros sing apparently aimed at a junc tion with Marshal Tito's partisan army. The Moscow radio reported that the Soviet high command asked Tito for permission to cross into Yugoslavia for mili tary operations, and the partisan commander agreed. The Russians have been mass ing on the Yugoslav frontier for weeks since their swift drive across Romania, and a Danube crossing from the Orsova area as reported by Berlin would open the Morava valley to them. On the northern front, Rus sian forces were driving over the approaches to Riga, routing the Nazi rear guard fighting for time to evacuate the Latvian capital. OBITUARY RAYMOND J. IIUST Raymond J.
