TEW MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, Sept. 17. 1944 CHEST CAMPAIGN WILL OPEN HERE ON OCTOBER 9TH Organizational Meeting Sep tember 21; Total Quota Reduced To $37,500 Monday, Oct. 9, has been sot by the directors of the Mcdford Community Chest as opening dote for the 1944 fund-raising campaign, It was announced Sat urday by A. M. Cannon, presi dent of the Chest. ?re-campalgn advertising and Informational work, and final organization of solicitors, are planned to be un der way by October 2. An Initial organizational meet ing of the Chest membership, beneficiary agencies and cooper ating clubs and Individuals, Is jet for 4 p. m., Thursday, Sept. 21. at the local Chamber of Com merce offire, It was further an nounced. The meeting will be open to the public and Interest ed citizens as well as represen tatives of affected groups, are especially urged to attend, it was further emphasized. Quota $37,500 As in the past, the Medford Chest campaign will be conduct ed Jointly with the National War Fund, which Is the largest single participant In Chest revenues. Combined quota for local and national agencies, to be raised In the coming Mcdford campaign, has been set by the directors at approximately $37,500, accord ing to Cannon. Last year's cam paign netted roughly $43,000. The War Chest quota has born the brunt of the reduction, which the Chest heads felt was pru dent In view of reduced local business activity resultant on reduction in Camp White per sonnel. Exact apportionment of an ticipated funds among the var ious Chest agencies and War Fund Is now under consideration by the Chest's budget commit tee, headed by Otto Frohnmayer. Member agencies of tho local Community Chest are Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Salvation Army, Girls' Community club. Public Health association, Rec reation association and the new ly organized Medford Y.M.C.A Principal beneficiaries of the War Fund are l.S.O., War Prisoners Aid, Refugee Relief. Committee for Care of Eupopean Children, and Danish, Czecho slovak, French, Italian, Nor wegian, Belgian, British, Luxem bourg, Greek, Philippine, Pol ish, Dutch, Russian, Lithuanian and Yugoslav War Relief so cieties, and United China Re lief State agencici Including Boys :iid Girls Aid society, Cath olic Charities, Wavcrlcy Baby Home, Oregon Mental Hygiene and Oregon Protective societies, and various mothers' and chil dren's homes also participate in war funds. Early Is Jackson coun ty chnlrman for the National War Fund, of which Charles Sprague Is state president. Object of the Chest is to re duce the number of local fund raising cnmpalgns, review agency budgets and provide for finan cing of worthy welfare, civic, patriotic and benevolent organ izations while promoting cooper ation and efficiency in such work. Full support of a large group of citizens is needed to complete the coming campaign successfully and attendance at the coming organizational meet ing is ihporlnnt, Cannon em phasized.. The Chest has no paid professional staff and its work is all on a volunteer basis. Seventy-three per cent of all workers in war plants depend on automobiles to get to work. DENNEY AREA MEETINGS SHOW INTEREST IN DAIRY CO-OP District meetings held last week in connection with the pro posal to organize a dairy coop erative in Jackson county show ed increasing interest in the pro ject, according to spokesmen of the committee sponsoring the movement. A meeting for the Ashland and Volleyvlcw districts was held in the Bellvlew Grange hall Tues day evening with a large group of dairymen present. All were reported strongly in favor of a cooperative. It was reported that the dairy cow survey is progress ing well in the two sections. Bob Lytle and Victor York were ap pointed on the sub-committee for southern Jackson county. On Wednesday evening a meet ing was held for the Eagle Point district, In Eagle Point Grange hall. It was brought out that the cow survey Is nearly complete in this district, with more cows signed for than In any other district of the county. Ed Col pitts and Ed Russell were ap pointed on the sub-committee for Eagle Point district. The northern Jackson county district meeting was held Thurs day evening at Gold 1 1 ill Grange hall. Practically all dairymen in this area have signed up, it was reported. In this district con siderable favor has been shown for a Joint dairy cooperative in cluding Jackson and Josephine counties. W, G. Howes and W. L. Drcsbach were named on the sub-committee for northern Jackson county, A meeting for Phoenix, Tal ent and east Medford districts will be held In the Phoenix Grango hall Wednesday, Septem ber 20, at 8:30 p. m. On Thursday, September 21 at 8:30 p. m. there will be a meeting in the Jacksonville Grango hall for the Jacksonville and Griffin Creek districts. Spokesmen for the committee said Saturday that the districts are all backing the dairy cow survey. The committeemen urged that everyone Interested in for mation of a dairy cooperative at tend the meetings, asserting that much information of value to dairymen Is being provided re gardless of where they are now selling their dairy products. Young Paralytic Will Be Treated In Berry School Thlrtccn-ycar-old Craig Dan lcJss of 823 East Ninth street has been enrolled at the Milton H. Berry school for paralysis correction In Portland and will leave soon to begin his treat ments. Craig is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Danlelson and will attend Washington school until leaving, for Portland. Afflicted in babyhood with paralysis of on undetermined nature, Craig Is unable to walk in any manner. However, It is hoped that he will be taking steps soon with tho aid of spe cial braces and crutches. The boy and his mother spent near ly a month in Portland this sum mer and the braces and crutches were designed and are being made now to his measurements. While at the Portlond school Craig's physical rehabiliatioi. program will be under the su pervision of Mrs. Marion H. Dcvereaux, managing director of the Portland division of the Berry organization which has schools located In cities through out the country. Mrs. Daniel son states that she and Mr. Danlelson hove been Investigat ing tho Portland school and Its type of treatment fur several years and that reports of cures have encouraged them to under take the treatment for Craig. If the flash comes after 5 p. m., Monday through Friday, stores will close immediately and remain closed the following day. If before 8 p. m., Monday through Friday, stores will close Immediately and open the fol lowing morning as usual. If after evening closing hours, stores will remain closed the fol lowing day. If the flash comes at any time Saturday, stores will close Im mediately and reopen as usual Monday morning. If Sunday morning, stores will open Monday morning as usual; If Sunday afternoon, stores will remain closed Monday. A union church service will be held at 7:30 p. m. in the Church of the Nazareno on V-day, or the day following, if the word comes after 7:30 p. m., accord ing to the Rev. Fred M. Weath erford, president of the Minister ial association. All churches have been requested to stay open for prayer during V-day. The following proclamation concerning the victory observ ance was issued Saturday by C. A. Meeker, mayor of Medford: Proclamation It is with rejoicing that we PASSES. AGED 75 Leatha Vinnie McCorkle, 75, passed away at her home, 723 West Jackson street, early Sat urday after a prolonged illness. Mrs. McCorkle was born at Spring Vnllcy, Oregon, April 20, 1809. Leatha Hale was united in marriage to Frank E. McCorkle at Ileppner, Oregon, on Septem ber 20, 1887. Mr. McCorkle pass ed away In 1033. She resided In Wasco county, Oregon, for 44 years, and also made her home In Grants Pass for five years. Besides a host of friends, she Is survived by two daughters and one son, Pearl Rhoads, of Maupin, Oregon, Cecelia Mc Corkle of Medford, who has been an English Instructor at the Jun ior high for several years, and Alfred A. McCorkle of Twin Falls, Idaho. Remains will be transferred to The Dalles, Ore., this evening. and funeral services will be held at Tygh Volley, Oregon, Tuesday at 2 p.m. Perl Funeral Home is In charge of the arrangements.
