TO LEI Talents Should Be Given Recognition 'Now That Political Threat Vanished' Valentine, Neb., Sept. 14 (U.R) Gov. Thomas E. Dewey suggested Wednesday "now that General MacArthur no longer Is a political threat" to Presl dent Roosevelt that "his talents be given greater scope and rec ognition." Dewey's statement was made at a news conference when he was asked to comment on the reports that selection of an over all commander for the Pacific war Is one of the principal sub jects of discussion at the Que bec conference between Presi dent Roosevelt and Prime Min ister Winston Churchill. Lonrj Overdue "I am not suggesting the name of an over-all commander since many international politi cal problems are involved as well as military questions," Dewey said. "I am suggesting that adequate recognition and supplies commensurate with MacArthur's talent is long over due." Dewey said that MacArthur has performed miracles with inadequate supplies and dem onstrated extraordinary gener alship. "Time after time he has made landings on heavily de fended, long prepared islands and almost every time he has managed to land at the exact spot where the Japanese were not," Dewey said. "Many more Japanese have been killed, captured and bot tled up by these skilful land ings than our entire losses un der Gen. MacArthur, including the Philippines." Dewey said he has two days of conferences with western cattle raisers and Impressed him with the tremendous job the livestock growers of the coun try have done in the face of tremendous difficulties. Rationing Blamed By inference, he blamed gov ernment regulations for the con tinuance of beef rationing. "We have 10,000,000 more head of cattle than is consid ered a normal supply yet we still have the rationing of beef," Dewey said. "The reason is that the cat tle is still on the ranges and not moving to the markets." Asked specifically if he- was suggesting the elimination of beef rationing Dewey said: "We can not eliminate beef rationing if the meat doesn't get to the market. The surplus is on the hoof. Meanwhile feed ers are going out of business one after another."
